Shelter FAQs

Since 1996, Animals for Life has rescued and rehomed more than 3,800 dogs & cats. Animals for Life is a 501(c)(3) non-profit animal rescue organization serving communities in Connecticut since 1996. Our organization is dedicated to the rescue, placement, and care of animals in need via adoptive placements, advocacy, and providing educational resources. Our passion is to improve the quality of life for all homeless, abused, or neglected animals in our communities.
Animals for Life is located in New Haven county Connecticut. We work with animal control officers all over Connecticut to assist animals in need. We also accept owner surrenders from all towns and cities in Connecticut, if the animal meets our requirements. We are Connecticut people helping Connecticut animals. If you are from out of state and want to adopt one of our animals, please send an e-mail explaining why our animal stands out above one in your home state. Please remember there are thousands of animals sitting in animal shelters all across our country. Before you decide to adopt an animal from another state, take a look at your local shelter or municipal animal control facility. We can almost guarantee the perfect four-legged friend is sitting there now waiting for you to rescue them! Thank You!

Additional adoption info

All of our prospective adopters must fill out an adoption application and review the application with one of our adoption coordinators. The adoption application will enable us to get to know you and your family a little better and help us to better match you with a pet that will suit your lifestyle.

We request that all members of a family be present at the time of application. It's important to us that all members of your household be comfortable with the animals that you are considering for adoption. We try to ensure that the animals you are looking at are a safe and compatible match for all members of your family by giving you information about the activity level, training needs and general personality traits of the animals in our care.

We try very hard to make the best possible match between your home and one of our pets, so we do reserve the right to deny any application. We also will accept multiple applications on the same animal in an effort to find it the best home.

We require written permission from your landlord or management company in the event that you rent your residence.

Animals for Life checks veterinarian references and will make a home visit before and after a pet is adopted. We do not ship any animal.

We remain available for assistance and follow-up advice after a pet goes to a new home. Remember, our job begins with an adoption—we are always happy to hear from you! Our adoption counselors are available to answer any training or behavior questions you may have.

Our adoption fee for adult cats is $225.00. Kittens 12 months of age and under will be adopted at $250.00. The adoption fee includes all age-appropriate shots, spay/neuter, test for FIV/FeLV, de-worming, and treatment for fleas/ticks (if needed). No cat will be officially adopted without first being spayed or neutered.

Applications for pairs of cats take priority over single-cat adoptions. No animal will be "reserved" for a family without an approved application. Our adoption fees are crucial to us being able to continue our work, and therefore are not refundable.
