Shelter FAQs

Montclair Township Animal Shelter (MTAS) is a municipal shelter providing animal control services as well as sheltering lost, stray, abandoned and unwanted animals. All animals are cared for by a small team of staff and volunteers, and the animals that are available for adoption are promoted via social media and local events. We work with other rescue organizations to accept and transfer animals, on an individual basis, depending on what is best for the animals. All dogs and cats are spayed or neutered and microchipped prior to adoption. In additional MTAS provides TNR services for Montclair & Nutley.
We accept lost, abandoned, stray and unwanted animals from Montclair & Nutley, NJ (our contracted towns). Adoption of animals is open to anyone willing to come visit the shelter to meet their future pet.

Additional adoption info

- Meet the animals and an adoption counselor
- Fill out an adoption application
- Veterinary and personal references are required
- Landlord approval or proof of home ownership
- Adoption fee due at time of adoption, fee varies by species and age
- Adopter must sign a contract at time of adoption (and must be at least 21 yrs old)
