Rescue FAQs

Mending Mutts is a small 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that privately fosters and adopts out homeless animals in Humboldt County. Our primary focus is animals that need extra time and assistance to find homes due to their medical or emotional issues. We provide these animals a safe place to heal from their previous trauma, while preparing them for life with their future families. We hope to show the public that animals with rough beginnings can develop into incredible, loyal companions if given enough time and TLC. We are only able to take animals that our limited space and current funding allows. We receive our animals from the Humboldt County Animal Shelter, as well as local veterinary clinics. We only take animals that are at risk of euthanasia in the county shelter, or those that are abandoned or surrendered with treatable or manageable medical conditions. All of our rescue efforts are accomplished by volunteers and donations from our community. We see injuries from gunshot wounds, to fractured legs, to temporary paralysis. Because the animals we take in are injured, and because even our emotionally troubled animals have a recovery period, we generally have them longer than a healthy dog. Our volunteers are committed to caring for these animals until they are truly ready to go to their adoptive homes, and the donations we receive go directly to the maintenance and medical care of these animals. We are always thrilled to receive donations of good quality food along with treats and toys! All animals adopted through Mending Mutts will be spayed/neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines before going to their new homes.
