West Columbia Gorge Humane Society (WCGHS) is an independent, 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal shelter located in Washougal, Washington.
Established in 1994, our programs and services are carried out by a small staff and over 200 volunteers who are dedicated to the welfare of animals in need from our community and beyond. Thousands of pets and people are the recipients of our compassionate care and assistance each year.
WCGHS is focused on bettering the lives of both pets and their people in our community. This is why we are committed to these tenets of socially conscious animal sheltering:
1. Finding placement for every healthy or treatable animal.
2. Ensuring unwanted or homeless pets have a safe place to go for shelter and care.
3. Assessing the medical and behavioral needs of unwanted or homeless animals and ensuring these needs are thoughtfully addressed.
4. Aligning shelter policy with the needs of the community.
5. Alleviating suffering and making conscientious decisions regarding euthanasia based on the health and safety of the animal.
6. Enhancing the human-animal bond through proper matchmaking and post-adoption support.

Adoption steps
- Submit ApplicationIf you do not know which animal you would like to meet, you may enter "cat" or "dog" under Animal Name.
- Approve ApplicationOnce the application is approved, a WCGHS team member will reach out by phone to schedule an on-site meet and greet appointment.
- Meet the PetIf you did not select an animal in your application, our adoption counselors will help you find the right pet.
- Pay FeeSome animals are available at a lower fee through the “Partners in Placement (PIP)" program.
- Sign Adoption ContractA WCGHS team member will work with the adopter to finalize paperwork and payment prior to leaving the shelter.
- Take the Pet HomeAll adopters are given an adoption bag to help welcome new pets into their home.
Additional adoption info
Adopter must be 18 years of age or older and have a valid photo ID.
Renters must provide a copy of their Renter’s Policy (or written letter from landlord) stating specific guidelines for what type of animals are permitted on the property.
All members of the household must agree to the adoption and meet the pet prior to finalizing the adoption.
You must meet any special requirements that have been set for the specific pet you are interested in adopting.
All WCGHS dogs go home:
-Spayed or neutered
-Microchipped
-Vaccines current to the pet's age
-Up-to-date on parasite control
-Free post-adoption vet appointment with a WCGHS veterinary partner
