Rescue FAQs

Kokua Cats is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit feline rescue based in Albany, Oregon, dedicated to transforming feral, stray, and vulnerable cats from at-risk to valued family members. Our work combines hands-on rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption with community education, wellness programs, and outreach. We operate two core initiatives: • “Until They’re Home” Program – in partnership with our local domestic violence survivors program and shelter, we provide confidential, trauma-informed foster care for the cats of survivors. This ensures pets are safe and supported, removing a critical barrier so victims can leave abusive situations without fear for their animals. • Ohana House & Feral Sanctuary – an open-concept, cage-free adoption and rehabilitation center where cats receive medical care, socialization, and enrichment, and where the public can interact with adoptable cats in a welcoming, home-like environment. Our activities include: • Intake, medical care, and socialization of feral and abandoned cats • Adoption services with ongoing support for families • Barn cat placements for unsocialized cats unsuitable for home life • Community wellness programs such as art classes and yoga sessions with cats, designed for both adults and children to foster connection, healing, and joy • Public outreach to stop the feral cat crisis, including free Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs, trap lending, and hands-on education on humane trapping and colony care • School and event presentations to build awareness and community advocates • Volunteer pathways in fostering, socialization, transport, and event staffing Mission: To reduce feral cat populations humanely, provide safe foster care for survivors’ pets, and create a sanctuary where people and cats connect with dignity, compassion, and hope.
