Shelter FAQs

Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit (FAMD) brings a little more love into the world by celebrating the special bond between an animal and their “person.” At FAMD, we don’t just rescue dogs and cats, we make life-changing connections with the people who adopt them.

We bring our passion and animals into the community with events that help bring together dogs and cats with loving people. And our outreach programs help promote education and animal welfare legislation locally, so that fewer animals have to spend another minute waiting for their forever home.

FAMD’s new state-of-the-art Animal Adoption and Education Center at 16121 Reckinger Road in Dearborn offers animals comfortable housing and medical support. It’s where our staff and volunteers work every day to make Metro Detroit a happier, more loving place for both two-legged and four-legged creatures alike.
We take strays and owner surrenders from the City of Dearborn in Wayne County. But we adopt to families all over metro Detroit, out of state, and even Canada.

Adoption steps

  1. Visit the Facility and Find a Pet
    1. Our experienced team will help you to find the perfect four-legged friend for your family!
  2. Submit Application
    1. You can submit a questionnaire at the adoption center, or online at www.metrodetroitanimals.org.
  3. Interview
    1. Our animal placement counselors will sit down with you to discuss your lifestyle, the pet's needs, and answer all your questions.
  4. Approve Application
    1. Our priority is to make great matches between pets and pet parents! Adopters must be at least 18 years of age with a valid photo ID.
  5. Take the Pet Home
    1. In most cases, the animals at our adoption center are ready to go home the same day!

Additional adoption info

All of our pets are sterilized, vaccinated, wormed, and microchipped!
