Rescue FAQs

GPA Tampa Bay is dedicated to promoting and facilitating the adoption of Greyhounds when their racing careers end, and to educate the public about Greyhounds and what wonderful pets they can become. Prior to adoption, all of our dogs are spayed or neutered, bathed with a flea shampoo, de-wormed, heartworm tested, vaccinated, and have their teeth cleaned. GPA Tampa Bay cares for the animals from the track to their new homes, using our network of foster homes where loving volunteers help them learn the trials and tribulations of life after the track. GPA Tampa Bay is run entirely by volunteers and depends on fundraising and donations for its operating expenses. Your Support and Donations are greatly appreciated.

Additional adoption info

The first step to adopt a greyhound from GPA/Tampa Bay is to fill our application. The questions asked are used to help determine if a greyhounds is the right breed of dog for your household.

Our local Representative will contact your veterinarian (if you have a pet) to verify that your pet is up-to-date on vaccinations and heartworm prevention. Personal references will also be contacted.

After the Application is approved, the adopter will have a home visit with an Adoption Representative. The home visit is time to see your home and to answer any questions that the you might have. It is asked that everyone in the household be present for this visit.

After your home visit, we look among the greyhounds we have available to find a good match for your home. This process usually takes a minimum of 1 week. If we do not have a greyhound that fits your particular needs, it may take several weeks. We ask that you be patient and wait for the right dog. Once adopted, you will agree that your greyhound was worth the wait.

There is a $205 adoption fee donation. GPA uses the fee to pay for neutering or spaying, vaccinations, heartworm testing and teeth cleaning. Remember, GPA/Tampa Bay is a non-profit organization. In addition, you also receive a collar and leash, and a GPA identification tag.
