Rescue FAQs

Saving the Animals of Rowan is a 501c3 organization committed to improving the conditions for the abandoned dogs of Rowan County, KY. Our few members work to find safe and loving homes or rescues for dogs that find themselves in the Tri-County Animal Shelter. STAR members are dedicated to reducing the number of dogs euthanized due to the overcrowded conditions of this rural shelter. STAR is not the dog pound. We are a small group of caring people who save shelter dogs. Our goal is to get dogs out of the pound and to the safety of a rescue or a new home. We can only help dogs outside the pound when space and funds are available. If you are local you can either give STAR a few weeks to work on placement for your dog or you can take your dog to the shelter and we will assess it there. We work solely on donations and are always in need of more local foster homes in the Rowan County KY area.

Additional adoption info

Application, vet reference check, home visit, meet-n-greet with the dog and all of your family members (2-legged and 4-legged) to see if it's a good fit. STAR will ALWAYS take back any dog if the adoption doesn't work out for any reason. All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, heartworm tested (treated if positive), dewormed, treated for fleas/ticks/mange as needed, and vaccinated with the first distemper combo and rabies vaccines.
