Areas American Brittany Rescue, Inc (MD,VA,DC) Serves

American Brittany Rescue is a national non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing stray, abandoned, surrendered and/or impounded purebred Brittanys, providing them with foster care, health and temperament screening, offering an opportunity for rehabilitation if necessary, assuring their health, and placing them in new homes.

American Brittany Rescue, Inc (MD,VA,DC)'s Adoption Process

If you have not submitted an adoption application as of yet please go to the ABR web site at It is ABR policy that a current application must be on file in your state and that a home visit be completed. This must be done prior to you're being eligible to adopt. This application is for American Brittany Rescue's use and will not be shared with anyone outside of ABR. Only the State Coordinator, the person who does your home visit and the fosters of the dogs you state you have a interest in on you application will have access to your application.

When you have received conformation that your application has been received please contact your state Coordinator.

We do not place our Brittanys on a first-come, first-serve basis. We review every application received. It is our goal to place our Britts in the very best home possible. Please read the bios for foster dogs carefully. This information will tell you if the dog does well with other dogs, does well with cats, does well with small children, and if a fence is required, etc. If a Britt does not tolerate young children etc, we will not entertain your application if you have a cat or young children. Dogs with specific requirements will be placed in environment that is best for them.

We have many people looking at the same dogs that you are interested in. Some have waited a long time to adopt. We want to choose the family that best matches the dogs needs. If you are not chosen to be the dogs family it isn't because you aren't a good family. It is because we feel the other family fulfills the needs of this particular dog.

A home visit must be set up and completed before you can take a dog into your home.

One of our ABR volunteers will be contacting the vet you have listed on your application.

This process takes time, we are volunteers, most of us hold full time jobs and help ABR as we are able. Please be patient. Please understand that you will not be able to adopt any dog until all of the requirements have been met.

Be aware that our adoption fee in MD, VA and DC is $325 for adults, $275 for seniors and $350 for puppies under 1 yr of age. That covers our costs for spaying/neutering, vaccinations, heartworm testing, worming and any other health issues a dog may have come to us with.

We have also recently introduce a Senior Companion Program. More information about this program is on our website.

If the dog you adopt from ABR is not spayed/neutered at the time of the adoption because of a health issue or the dog is a young pup a $150.00 spay/neuter deposit is required and will be refunded to you upon proof of spay/neuter.

Once you have adopted a Brittany from ABR we are here to help in anyway we can. Please stay in touch with the foster of your dog for at least 1 month after adopting so they can help if any problem arises.

About American Brittany Rescue, Inc (MD,VA,DC)

American Brittany Rescue was formed in 1991 as a cooperative effort of Brittany owners, breeders, trialers, & fanciers who believe we have a responsibility not only for our own dogs and the dogs we produce, but for our breed as a whole. Because many rescue dogs can be traced 1-3 generations back to a recognized breeder, we believe all breeders should take it upon themselves to assist Brittanys in need, in any way they can.

The purpose of rescue is to take in stray, abandoned, surrendered and/or impounded purebred Brittanys, provide them with foster care, health and temperament screening, offer an opportunity for rehabilitation if necessary, assure their health and place them in new homes.

Brittanys can make wonderful family dogs and excel in many areas, but they are not for everyone. They are active, playful, energetic dogs who require personal attention every day. If you'd like to learn whether a Brittany is a good choice for you, your family and/or your lifestyle, please read Choosing a Brittany. Although some rescued dogs do hunt with their new families, our primary concern is finding homes where they will be a valued member of the family.

If you'd like a sweet, loving, playful companion, please check out our Available Dogs section. If you don't see a dog in your area, and are seriously interested in adopting a Brittany, please go to the Regional Coordinators page and get in touch with the volunteer nearest to you. If you'd like more information about rescue, please explore our ABR website. The Message Board is a good place to talk with other Brittany people and ask questions.
