Areas Cape Ann Animal Aid Serves

We serve Cape Ann and the North Shore of Massachusetts and beyond. We place animals into new families regardless of location as long as all the requirements for adoption can be met.

Cape Ann Animal Aid's Adoption Process

To adopt one of our cats or dogs we ask that you come to the shelter during our operating hours or submit an application for a specific animal through our website

If you are planning to visit or adopt in person, we ask that renters bring the name and contact number for their landlord. Home owners please bring proof of home ownership such as a mortgage statement, home owners insurance, property taxes etc. You can block out the financial amounts, we just need you name in conjunction with the property.

If you have existing pets, we ask that you bring the name and number of your veterinarian. If you know the office will be closed please bring your pets' veterinary receipts to show that your current pets are up to date with routine care and vaccinations.

Please be prepared to bring your entire family to meet any potential new pet as the animals may be more or less responsive to adults, women, men, and children. We want to ensure the pet is a good fit for the entire household.

If you are planning to adopt a dog or puppy and already have a canine family member at home, they must meet prior to adoption. It is important to see that your present dog and the perspective pup get along before bringing them home.

There is an adoption fee for each animal which helps offset some of the cost of care given to the animal prior to adoption. All of our animals are given a health exam by a licensed veterinarian, are spayed/neutered, and have received all age-appropriate vaccinations. All cats/kittens receive FIV/FeLv testing and dogs 6 months and older receive Heartworm/Lyme/E.canis testing.

All adopted pets are micro-chipped and sent home with a small bag of food, cats are sent home with a cardboard carrier if needed. Dogs receive a collar and leash if needed.

Adoption fees are as follows:
Puppies under 12 months old: $500
Dogs 1 to 5 years old: $425
Dogs 6 years and older: $325

Kittens under 12 months old: $275
Cats 1 to 5 years old: $175
2 Adult Cats: $300
Cats 6 years and older: $50(fee waived for adopters 65+)

Before making the trip to visit, we strongly recommend checking our website for more complete information on adoption policies and procedures.

Pets can be adopted quickly, and although we update the pet list on our website daily, a puppy or kitten you see on our website before you leave may be adopted by the time you arrive. To inquire about a pet's availability or for more information please visit or phone the shelter (978-283-6055).

Because we are a busy place and because so many animals need our care and attention, adoptions are on a first come basis and no animal will be put on hold, we appreciate your understanding.
