Shelter FAQs

Harbor Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit animal shelter located in West Olive, MI. Founded in 1956 as the Ottawa Shores Humane Society, we have been serving our West Michigan community and beyond for almost 70 years, and we hold the municipal contract for Ottawa County. On average, over 3,500 animals enter our facility each year as strays, animals transferred in, and owner surrenders. We are committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all members of our staff, customers, volunteers, subcontractors, vendors, and clients.
Ottawa and Surrounding Counties.

Adoption steps

  1. Visit the Facility and Find a Pet
  2. Submit Application
Download and fill out our adoption survey. You can either email it to office@harborhumane.org or complete a survey in person at the shelter
  3. Approve Application
Our team will review your submission. An adoption counselor will then go over your survey with you and discuss potential matches.
  4. Meet the Pet
Once your survey is approved, you’ll have the chance to meet animals that are a good match for your lifestyle.
  5. Pay Fee
See our dog, cat, and rabbit adoption fees and what's included at https://harborhumane.org/adopt/
  6. Take the Pet Home
In many cases, the new love of your life will be ready to go home the same day (some animals may require a final vet check before leaving).
