Shelter FAQs

We are a part of Pitt County Government and have to house all of the unwanted animals in Pitt County. Our adoption hours are from 1pm-5:00 pm Monday-Friday. Owner surrenders are only accepted on Tuesdays and Thursday by appointment only and there is a $20 surrender fee per animal.
We are a small shelter that services the entirety of Pitt County, located in Greenville, North Carolina. Stray and Missing Animals: If you have lost a pet please report it to our shelter and come in to look for your pet immediately. Stray animals often times can only be held for the minimum time due to space, 72 hours for cats, and five business days for dogs... Also, if you live within the city limits of Ayden, Grifton, Bethel, Farmville, Winterville or within the city limits of Greenville, all of these towns manage their own Animal Control issues and have holding pens where they often hold the animals for 72 hours. So please contact them as well if you are missing a pet!! Owner Surrenders: If you have a pet you wish to surrender to us you must CALL us first to see if space is available for intake. YOU MUST BE FROM PITT COUNTY IN ORDER TO SURRENDER AN ANIMAL TO OUR FACILITY. There is a $20 Owner Surrender fee to surrender your pet to the Pitt County Animal Shelter. If space is available, you will be given a time to bring your pet in. Please bring any medical records that you may have for your pet and a minimum of a valid driver's license. We cannot guarantee adoption for each animal that is surrendered to our facility. Volunteering: There are many opportunities for volunteers at the Pitt County Animal Shelter, from cleaning and caring for the pets in our shelter, to helping with adoption events. You must be at least 16 years old to volunteer at the shelter. If you're interested in volunteering with us, stop by the shelter any weekday afternoon to speak with our Admins about our new volunteer orientation and how to sign up today!

Additional adoption info

We offer a very simple adoption process. All animals MUST be spayed/neutered before going home with the adopter! All of our dogs are vaccinated with DHPP and Bordetella vaccine upon entry to our shelter. Dogs and puppies have an adoption fee of $125. Cats and kitten have an adoption fee of $85. If the animal is already altered at the time of adoption, they will have a reduced adoption fee and you will be able to take the pet home with you that day. If the animal is not altered at the time of adoption, then we hold the pet overnight and take them to our vet the next business day to be spayed or neutered. The adopter will then pick the pet up from our vets office that afternoon. Dogs have a scheduled pick up time of 3:00p.m. on the day of their surgery, while cats are scheduled to be picked up at 4:30p.m. All pets MUST be picked up from the vets office by the adopter no later than 5:00p.m. on the day of their surgery.

*** The animals listed on our website with Names are available for adoption now. While the pets with just ID Numbers are still on stray hold and should be available soon. Please call us if you have questions about any of the pets in our shelter. ***
