Animal Humane New Mexico's Adoption Process

1. Visit the Facility and Find a Pet

We are open 7 days a week from 10 am-5:30 pm to meet pets, on a first-come, first-served basis. Please come on by any time we're open!

2. Meet the Pet

You will fill out a brief adoption survey and an adviser will run a background check (this should take less than 5 minutes).

3. Take the Pet Home

You may meet with several pets in one day, and our staff and volunteers will help you find a good match!

Adoption Requirements/Recommendations
•Every pet adopted from Animal Humane New Mexico has been spayed/neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, health checked and loved.
•If you have a dog and are looking to adopt another dog we ask that you bring your dog for an introduction (This does not apply to cats!)
•We also recommend that all people in the household (including children) come in to meet the pet before adoption.
•Adopting a pet is a lot of responsibility, but it is also a wonderful experience. We want to ensure that you pick an animal that truly matches your lifestyle, so we do ask that you arrive by 5:30 in order to really get to know your new family member.

About Animal Humane New Mexico

Founded in 1965, Animal Humane New Mexico is the state’s leading private 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal welfare organization serving more than 10,000 homeless and at-risk dogs & cats each year. We never euthanize based on age or length of stay and since 2010, have re-homed 100% of healthy pets in our care. We support every companion animal at Animal Humane with outstanding veterinary, social and emotional care, and love.

As a private nonprofit shelter, we receive no city, state or federal funding; each dollar judiciously spent is earned or raised. We are nationally recognized as a top U.S. charity based on financial accountability, transparency, and administrative-to-program cost ratios. Animal Humane is among only 9 percent of nationwide charities to have received five consecutive annual four-star evaluations, the highest possible, from Charity Navigator, including a top score of 100 for accountability and transparency.
