Shelter FAQs

The Humane Society of Southwest Missouri is an independent, 501(c)3 non-profit organization incorporated in 1956 and licensed by the Missouri Department of Agriculture. Funding for the organization comes from private donations. We do not receive any funding from any government agencies. We are the largest No Kill shelter in Southwest Missouri. No Kill means we do not believe in euthanizing animals for space, and we are dedicated to finding a home for every animal that comes through our doors.

We receive our animals from people giving up their pets for a variety of reasons, including changes in family situations and moving. Some of our animals have been strays rescued from the streets by a kind citizen. All of our animals are looking for permanent and loving forever homes!
We are located in Springfield, Missouri and serve the Greene County area.

Adoption steps

  1. Submit Application
    1. Please submit an application in person or online for any animal you're interested in meeting. You may list multiple names on a single app.
  2. Approve Application
    1. Please visit the shelter to go over your online application. If the application is done in person, we will inform you at that time.
  3. Meet the Pet
    1. Once your app is approved, you can meet the animals you're interested in! We will have you meet one at a time in a meet and greet room.
  4. Pay Fee
    1. After we've gone over the animal's file and answered any questions you may have, you'll pay the adoption fee and finalize the adoption.
  5. Take the Pet Home
    1. Congratulations on your new family member! Most animals can go home with you the same day you meet them. (Medical adopts may vary)
