Shelter FAQs

We are a county shelter run by a group of very dedicated, unpaid volunteers called the Wabash County Animal Shelter Buddies (WCASB). Wabash County Animal Shelter is licensed by the State of Illinois Department of Agriculture. WCASB is 501c3. The WCASB helps coordinate adoption and rescue of dogs and cats from the Wabash County Animal Shelter to adopters and rescues near and far. Our mission is to increase the number of pet adoptions/rescues from the Wabash County Animal Shelter, to provide a clean, safe, and friendly environment to animals during their stay at our shelter, to educate the public about pet overpopulation and the importance of spay/neuter practices, and to promote awareness of the benefits of adopting a shelter pet. We would love to help you find the perfect addition to your family, whether you're a local resident, or are contacting us from out of state, we're here to help!
The Wabash County Animal Shelter is a county-maintained, kill shelter located in rural Southeastern Illinois, and serves Wabash County residents. While only animals from Wabash county are admitted to the shelter, approved adopters from any location are allowed to adopt our shelter pets.

Additional adoption info

If you are interested in adopting an animal, please contact the Wabash County Animal Shelter at wabashcountybuddies@outlook.com to receive an adoption screening form. An approved adoption screening form is the first step in adopting any of our shelter animals. Once we receive your application, we will look over it and check your references. If everything looks good, we will let you know that your application is approved. We may contact you for more information about any part of your application if we feel something is unclear or we have a concern. Should your application be denied, you will be given an explanation. We're happy to adopt locally or out of state. Adoption fees for dogs/ puppies are $100 and $65 for cats/kittens. Most of our animals are already spayed/neutered and fully vaccinated. If they aren't already, we'll work with you to get the animal spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped as part of the adoption process.
