Adoptable Pets at Humane Society of Broward County

Shelter FAQs

The Humane Society of Broward County is a private, non-profit organization that was founded in 1944. We are an open admission shelter that accepts all owned animals. We find homes for thousands of animals each year.

Our shelter has more than 500 volunteers that help in all areas. We also have an extensive Education Department that visits schools on a regular basis to teach respect and kindness to all animals.

In addition to spaying and neutering all the pets that are adopted, we also offer low-cost spay/neuter services for pets belonging to residents in our community and feral cats. To get your pet sterilized contact spayneuter@hsbroward.com

Other programs and services the shelter offers include:
low cost dog obedience classes; free behavioral counseling; pet loss and grieving sessions; animal assisted therapy, foster care; microchip and vaccination clinics; owner's request for pet euthanasia and cremation; pet boutique and community events.
Adopters come from all over South Florida (and beyond) to adopt. Stop by! You may just fall in love.

Adoption steps

  1. Visit the Facility and Find a Pet
You can view the pet and review its information online, but you must visit the facility in order to begin the adoption process.
  2. Interview
You will have a brief interview with a staff member to see if the animal fits your family and lifestyle.
  3. Meet the Pet
If the animal seems like a fit, you and your family get to meet him/her! A meet-and-greet can also be arranged to introduce furry family.
  4. Sign Adoption Contract
  5. Pay Fee
  6. Take the Pet Home
If the pet is spayed/neutered and up-to-date on vaccines, he/she can go home right away. If not, you will pick him/her up the next day.

Additional adoption info

Please visit our shelter, we are open 7 days a week and adoptions opens daily at 11 a.m. All adopters will meet with an adoption counselor to complete an adoption application and then meet their potential new family member.
