Shelter FAQs

The mission of the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland (ARLGP) is to provide temporary care and shelter for stray, abandoned, confiscated and relinquished animals, and to place as many as possible into responsible and caring homes; to work to create awareness and support for the humane treatment of all animals; to end animal overpopulation through education and the promotion of spaying and neutering; to make end-of-life decisions based on safety and animal welfare considerations.

The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland (ARLGP) is a private nonprofit animal shelter established in 1911. Every year, we take in more than 4,000 stray, abandoned or owner surrendered animals.

Adoption steps

  1. Visit the Facility and Find a Pet
All of our adoptions are first come, first served and there is no application to fill out prior to coming in.
  2. Meet the Pet
Once our adoption counselors understand what you are looking for in your next pet, they will help you decide which animal(s) to meet.
  3. Sign Adoption Contract
If it's mutually determined to be a good fit, you will sign the paperwork that day.
  4. Pay Fee
When you sign the paperwork, you will also pay the application fee.
  5. Take the Pet Home
Potential adopters should be ready to leave with the pet they are adopting that day.
