Shelter FAQs

The Helen O. Krause Animal Foundation, Inc. (HOKAFI) is a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter for dogs and cats located in Dillsburg, Pennsylvania. The shelter is run primarily by a dedicated corps of volunteers and governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. The Foundation depends entirely on the private sector for funding through donations, membership dues, grants and fundraising activities. The shelter, founded by the late Helen Opperman Krause, now sits on approximately two acres of landscaped grounds in a rural community and consists of a state-of-the-art main cat shelter built in 1999, a recently remodeled cat shelter annex and a dog kennel. At any given time, this complex is home to as many as 140 cats and kittens and 10 dogs.

All of our adult cats are spayed or neutered. Our adoption fee for adults under 7 years of age is $80.00 plus 6% tax.The adoption fee for cats who are 7 years or older is now only $25.00 plus 6% tax. For kittens, the adoption fee is $70 plus tax plus and additional $30 sterilization deposit which is returned upon receipt of proof of spaying. It is a state law that all cats and kittens adopted from a shelter must be spayed by age 6 months.

We have many wonderful senior cats who deserve a home of their own! Please consider adopting a new friend who is older.
