Halfway Hounds's adoption process

Additional adoption info

Halfway Hounds will help you find the perfect dog for you and your family!

All Halfway Hounds are screened thoroughly before they are placed up for adoption. They have had a full behavioral or temperament evaluation. We test their reactions to a variety of things including handling, toys, rawhides and food. We also do our best to assess our dog’s behavior with other dogs, cats and children.

In addition to a behavior analysis, we make sure our dogs are medically cleared prior to being placed in a home. All dogs are:
- Given a thorough examination, including blood work screening and treated for any medical issues.*
- Vaccinated against Distemper/Parvo/Parainfluenza and Bordetella or kennel cough.
- Screened for heartworm disease and intestinal parasites (dogs are placed on both heartworm and flea and tick preventative monthly while in our care).
- Spayed or neutered prior to adoption.
- Microchipped and will be registered to you at the time of adoption.
*Any medical issues are presented to you upon meeting the dog and can be discussed with our veterinary or medical team.

When you wish to adopt a dog from Halfway Hounds, we will complete the following process:

Submit an application - you can do this online at https://www.halfwayhounds.org/adoption-application or by downloading the application and e-mailing it to us at adopt@halfwayhounds.org. Please take time to complete as much information as you can. This helps us determine if a dog is the right fit for you and your family.

Once we receive your application, please allow us several days to contact you as we are an all-volunteer organization.

- We will perform a vet reference check. Please call your vet and let them know we will be contacting them. If needed, fill out any necessary paperwork to allow us to speak with them. We will be asking questions such as whether your current or past pets were spayed and neutered, if they are/were up-to-date on vaccinations, if they are/were on heartworm preventative medication and if you followed their recommendations.

- Please consider being open to other dogs we might recommend. We want to make a forever placement and sometimes we might have the perfect dog for you that you never even considered. We ask that all “humans” in the household meet the dog first. If you have other pets in the home, we will schedule a second appointment to introduce our Halfway Hound to your dog(s) or other animals to ensure compatibility.

- We will schedule a home visit and interview. We request that all family members are present at this time.

- All of our adoptions begin with a two week foster-to-adopt period. During that time, Halfway Hounds maintains ownership and responsibility for the dog. You will be required to follow certain rules during this time period. Your adoption coordinator will review them at the time of drop off.

- Your dog will come with all the supplies you will need for the two-week period. This includes: a crate and bedding, bowls, food, and any medications needed.

- If for any reason during the foster period, or any time after adoption, you cannot keep your dog, you MUST return the dog to Halfway Hounds.

- All Halfway Hounds come with training and behavior assistance during the foster-to-adopt period.

- We have created a detailed handout for you to read prior to bringing a Halfway Hound into your home, download the PDF here: https://62d76dce-f345-4941-b197-b16eca892558.filesusr.com/ugd/be64f9_bf1d9d26122f4eb8bea3a3a66f811ded.docx?dn=Adoption%20Program.docx

About Halfway Hounds

Halfway Hounds’ mission is to provide homeless adoptable dogs who have run out of time or options - a new leash on life. We provide temporary foster or kennel housing, grooming, behavior assessment, obedience training, medical attention and most importantly LOVE, until they are matched with their forever families. A group of dedicated volunteers provide support, education and training (to both the dog and family) to help ensure these adoptions are a success!

We visualize a community in which:
- No adoptable pets are euthanized.
- All pets are wanted and considered part of the family.
- Halfway Hounds is a valuable resource for education and training, to assure successful and permanent placement of homeless dogs.

Adopt a Pet is the easiest way for you to search for a new pet in Park Ridge, NJ.

Support adoption and rescue. Why go to a dog breeder, cat breeder or pet store to buy a dog or buy a cat when you can adopt?

Why should you adopt?

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
