Shelter FAQs

Churchill County's no-kill rescue - rescuing, healing, and rehoming dogs and cats since 1986.

Every animal that walks through our doors carries a story. Maybe they were abandoned on the side of a desert highway. Maybe their family fell on hard times. Maybe they arrived frightened, sick, or unsure if the world was safe.

At CAPS, we answer that question every single day: it is.

For four decades, our team of dedicated staff and volunteers has been giving Churchill County's most vulnerable animals the one thing they need most — a chance. A chance to heal. A chance to be loved. A chance to find the family they were always meant to have.

"We believe every life has value. Every animal deserves care. And every family deserves the joy of the right match."
The Churchill Animal Protection Society (CAPS) primarily serves Churchill County by providing care for local animals in need.

While our intake is focused locally, we proudly adopt to approved homes anywhere. Our priority is finding safe, loving, and committed forever homes for every animal in our care—no matter the location.

If you’re ready to welcome a new companion into your life, we’re happy to work with adopters near and far to make the right match!

Additional adoption info

Our goal is to create the best possible match for both our animals and adopters. We are committed to honest, thoughtful placements that set everyone up for long-term success.
• Meet & Greets: Meet and greets are not required. Because shelter environments can be stressful and do not always reflect a dog’s true behavior, we do not rely on meet and greets to determine compatibility. However, they are available upon request.
• Application Review: Applications are carefully reviewed to match each pet with a home that fits their needs, energy level, and temperament.
• Behavior Transparency: We strive to be as transparent as possible about each animal’s personality, history, and needs so adopters can make informed decisions.
• Home Environment: Some pets may require specific environments (such as secure fencing, no other pets, or an experienced handler).
• Adoption Fees: Fees help cover spay/neuter, vaccinations, and overall care while the animal is with us.
• Commitment: Adopting a pet is a long-term commitment. We are looking for stable, loving homes prepared to provide care for the lifetime of the animal.
• Support: Our team is available for guidance during the transition and beyond—we want you and your pet to succeed!
