Dogs Deserve Better - Nashville TN

Dogs Deserve Better is a National Non-Profit advocacy group for chained and penned dogs.

We educate owners on the dangers of keeping your dog chained up 24/7. These dogs get little to no interaction and dogs are VERY social animals. They need to live with their family. When dogs lived chained up for long periods of time, they get very frustrated, they have no outlet for any of their energy. Usually dogs that are chained up are completely exposed to the elements. They have no fence to protect them from stray dogs, wild animals or even mean children that may come attack them. Recently in Lebanon TN, two dogs died because they were attacked by a swarm of bee's and were chained up and could not escape. Most people who chain their dogs are not aware of all of the dangers of chaining their dogs up.

As volunteer reps for Dogs Deserve Better we first educate owners. Then we work with them to find out why the dog is chained and see if we can help find a better solution for everyone. We even help them build a fenced in yard if they will agree to bring the dog inside the home with the family at least part of the time. We also work with local law makers to push for stronger anti-tethering laws. Many counties around the country have already put in place anti-tethering laws and even a few states have STATE WIDE anti-tethering laws.

If we come across an owner of a chained dog who realizes that they just can not give their dog the life it deserves, we will help them re-home the dog. That is where most of the dogs on this page have come from. Either owner release or else the dog was abandoned on a chain.

There are more cases of chained dogs in Middle TN right now than our reps are able to keep up with. If you would like to volunteer some of your time to helping our local communities giving a voice to dogs that are chained up, alone, scared and desperately begging for our help, please visit our website at www.dogsdeservebetter.org or give me a call at (615) 469-0561 and I will let you know how you can help!

Additional adoption info

Dogs Deserve Better has a thorough screening process to ensure that we find a wonderful adoptive family for our dogs.

We want to make sure that we pair up the right dog with the right family so that it's a great experience bringing your new dog home. It's important that we place all of our dogs with great families in safe & healthy environments. Our goal is to make sure that it's an easy transition for everyone!

Dogs Deserve Better has an adoption contract that I can e-mail over to you immediately for you to start reviewing. After we go through our screening process, we must have this contract signed and returned to us before we release any of our dogs to their new families.

We will do a "home-visit" to make sure that your home is a safe and healthy environment for your new dog. We want to see how and where the dog will be living and meet his/her new family members.

We will also talk with your vet. It's important that your dog has access to medical care. Dogs need to stay up to date on shots, heart-worm preventative, and flea prevention.

Then we will do a "test-run" or a sleepover as we like to call them. We will let your potential new family member stay over a night or two so we can see how everyone likes each other. :)

Once we get our Dogs Deserve Better Contract signed and returned to us, your new dog is now a part of your family :)

Since all of our dogs are rescued from living it's life on a chain or in a small pen, it's highly recommended that your family gets your new dog to obedience school within the first 2 weeks of bringing him or her home. Most of these dogs have lived their whole life outside with little human interaction. They will need to learn rules and manors so that you enjoy having them inside your home and part of your family. To make sure they have a very happy and healthy life, it's SO important that you get them in school right away so you can learn the proper way to teach them how to be a part of your family. It will make all the difference in bonding with your new dog and enjoying them being a good dog. They want SO badly to make you happy and sometimes they don't know how to do that. Obedience school will be IMPERATIVE for all of you to succeed as you bring home your new dog.
