Additional adoption info

If you are interested in one of our pets that are in need of adoption, please fill out our adoption application on our website and return it as soon as possible! We do require references & a home check prior to adoption. (This process can take up to a week to process, depending upon your location. Please understand it can take us up to a week to respond to phone calls, it is always best to communicate through email.) Once your application has been approved we can introduce you to the pet that you are interested in adopting! Our adoption fees generally run around $40 for cats and $60 for dogs. All of our available pets are current on their vaccinations, are healthy unless otherwise disclosed, microchipped and spayed or neutered. There is an adoption contract (a sample is provided on our website) that must be signed by the adoptee. Each adoption contract is different, it depends on the individual animal. We do have rules for adoption on our website as well, but we are here for the best interest of the individual animal and sometimes there are exceptions to the rule.

About Happy Tails Refuge

Why we do what we do.....
Every day over 32,000 dogs and cats are placed in animal shelters - that's over 11 million animals a year. Add birds, small animals, reptiles and other pets and the annual number grows by millions. Over 25% of the dogs in shelters are pure bred; the rest are equally, if not more lovable, mixed breeds - affectionately referred to as "mutts".
Individuals and families rely on animal shelters to provide a vast selection of dogs and cats in all colors, shapes and sizes for adoption. However, despite the tireless efforts of the caring professionals at animal shelters throughout the country, only one-half (at best) of the animals at shelters are adopted in any given year!
**This means that approximately 6 million animals DIE every year. They DIE alone, cold and unwanted in over crowded, under staffed facilities! **

My mission is to change this number and make a difference, one pet or person at a time. We focus on public education, childrens events and helping pet owners know that there are other options out there to help them in their time of need. We need to help people learn that pets are not disposable and to help them realise just what it is they are doing when they give their pets away.
HTR Animal Rescue is new to the community and we opened in early 2010. We are currently a home based animal rescue but hope to raise enough money to have our own facility! Cats, dogs and other animals of all ages rescued, found, or surrendered to HTR, are all needed to be placed in foster homes while waiting to be adopted. The more foster care homes that we have, the more lives that will be saved!

Happy Tails Refuge's adopted pets

Adopt a Pet is the easiest way for you to search for a new pet in Virginia Beach, VA.

Support adoption and rescue. Why go to a dog breeder, cat breeder or pet store to buy a dog or buy a cat when you can adopt?

Why should you adopt?

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
