Shelter FAQs

The Metro East Humane Society (MEHS) is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 charitable organization dedicated to the prevention of cruelty to animals, the relief of suffering among animals, the provision of appropriate care and medical attention to an disposition of animals committed to its care, the extension of humane education, and the encouragement of animal population control. It is our policy to provide humane care and treatment for all animals needing protection in the area served by the Society, to seek to return lost animals to their owners, and to seek suitable homes for animals without owners. MEHS is financially supported solely through the generosity of the public. We receive no financial support from taxes or from the government. Our financial survival depends on generous donations from humane members of the public like you.
We currently serve a 5-county area in southwestern Illinois, offering an adoption program for homeless animals.

Additional adoption info

An adoption application must be filled out and approved by MEHS staff prior to an adoption. Adoption fees are $175 for dogs over 4 months of age, $200 for puppies under 4 months of age. Kittens under 4 months of age are $100 and cats over 4 months of age are $50. We have promotions on adoptions regularly which are posted on our Facebook page, Metro East Humane Society.
