Fox Valley Ferret Shelter's adoption process

Additional adoption info

We start with a phone interview to make sure the person has a realistic expectation of having ferrets. Once the person passes the interview (and not everyone does) we set up a play date for the person to come to the shelter and spend time with the appropriate ferrets. The adoption is done after the play date if appropriate.
Adopters agree to return the ferret(s) to the shelter if at any time they can no longer keep them.
We place a follow up call to the adopter approx 2 months after the adoption but instruct adopters not to wait for our call if they have any questions or concerns.
The adoption fee is $40 for a single, $60 for a pair which covers our cost for the vet check and distemper shots. We offer special adoption packages for senior or hard to place animals.
We do not list the adoption fee on our site because we don't want people to come here looking for "cheap" ferrets and because we can (and have) at first quoted a much higher fee to find out if certain adopters had thought things out and had resources to care for ferrets.

About Fox Valley Ferret Shelter

Fox Valley Ferret is a 501(c)-3 tax exempt shelter serving Central and Northern Wisconsin and the U.P. (and sometimes MN). We have been sheltering since 1995 and have never turned away a ferret regardless of age, veterinary needs or behavior issues. Ferrets inappropriate for adoption remain with us until they go to the bridge. We are 100% volunteer run and do not receive any government funding. We try to return all calls the same day, but the shelter mom works two jobs outside of the shelter, which include evening and weekend hours.

Support adoption and rescue. Why go to a dog breeder, cat breeder or pet store to buy a dog or buy a cat when you can adopt?

Why should you adopt?

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
