The Oconee Humane Society addresses animal welfare issues in Oconee County, South Carolina. Our mission is to prevent cruelty to animals by helping provide shelter for unwanted animals, developing educational programs for responsible pet ownership, conducting spay and neuter programs, placing adoptable animals in humane environments, advocating for the humane treatment of all animals, and supporting animal welfare issues. Our goal is to assist with controlling pet overpopulation in Oconee County by encouraging the purchase of spay and neuter certificates and being an advocate for the humane treatment of animals. Both the Oconee County Sheriff's Department Animal Control Unit and the Oconee Humane Society are based at the Oconee Animal Shelter. Animal Control has the responsibility for overseeing the operations at the shelter, including vaccinating and caring for the animals. They respond to animal issues and complaints in the community. The Oconee Humane Society is responsible for the adoption and spay & neuter certificate programs.
We serve Oconee County, in the upstate of South Carolina and surrounding areas. We also work with many rescues and shelters to find homes for our pets.

Adoption Fee for Dogs and Puppies are $85.This includes spay or neuter procedure, heartworm test if over 6 mos, age appropriate vaccinations, de-worming, microchip and post-adoption veterinarian wellness check. When adopting puppies, please include costs of follow-up booster shots in your overall consideration..

Adoption Fee for Cats and Kittens are $75. This includes spay or neuter procedure, age appropriate vaccinations, de-worming, microchip and post-adoption veterinarian wellness check. For kittens, you should include costs of follow-up booster shots in your overall consideration.

We ask that you come to the shelter and speak with a volunteer. We have an outside run that you can spend time with the dog "and get to know each other".

You will be asked to fill out an application. If you rent your residence, you will be asked to provide verification that you are allowed to have a pet. You may be asked to provide a veterinarian reference especially if you have other pets in the household.

You must be at least 18 years old to adopt a pet.

You will be asked to sign a contract with that states that the information you have provided is truthful and that you will care for the pet. This contract is with between you and Oconee County Animal Control as we are their liason for adoptions at the shelter.

There are no refunds.

All of our pets are ready for immediate adoption. This means that you should be prepared to take the pet with you. Consider your availability to spend time with the pet as it will need to get adjusted to its new home.

Adoption fees payable to Oconee Humane Society. OHS accepts cash, check and credit / debit cards.
