PLEASE ACT QUICKLY - ATHENS GA HAS A LARGE PET OVERPOPULATION PROBLEM, WHICH MAKES THIS IS A HIGH-KILL SHELTER.. Refer to the animal's ID number when contacting animal control (see phone numbers below.). These postings are monitored daily by volunteers but cannot be up-to-the-minute accurate. For the most up to date information, please call the shelter. Stray animals in Athens have a 5 day hold period after entering the shelter (excluding Weds. when the shelter is closed.) Owner surrendered pets have no hold period. Animal Control tries to keep every animal as long as possible, but if the shelter is full and more animals are on the way, they must euthanize.
