Shelter FAQs

The San Marcos Animal Shelter is the regional animal shelter for Hays County. We are part of the Neighborhood Enhancement division of Community Services for the City of San Marcos. As a municipal shelter, our facility is open intake. This means we accept lost, found and owner surrendered animals from within Hays County and city limits of Kyle, Buda and San Marcos. Our facility is approximately 15,000 sq. ft. with an Adoption Center that is separate from our pick-up and drop-off area. Other services we offer are Animal Control for the City of San Marcos, Volunteer Program, Public Education, and an Annual Rabies Clinic.

Additional adoption info

We encourage everyone interested in adopting a new pet to come visit the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter to view the wonderful selection of cats, dogs and small animals we have available for adoption. When you see an animal you are interested in, come in as soon as possible as we are first come, first serve and are unable to place HOLDS on pets over the phone.

Speak to an Adoption Counselor at our Adoption Center regarding your interest to adopt and they will advise you of the Hold and Adoption process. All pets adopted from our facility are microchipped, spayed or neutered and vaccinated for Rabies prior to being released to the adopter. This is required by Texas State Law for any animal adopted from an animal shelter or rescue group. We do allow out of area adoptions as long as the selected pet is old enough to receive these services prior to being released to the adopter.
