Shelter FAQs

Founded in 1912, the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society (GMHS) nonprofit animal shelter celebrates the human-pet bond and is committed to the welfare of every animal in its care. Each year, GMHS transforms the lives of over 8,000 animals through its services in rural Coastal Virginia.
We serve the Gloucester, Mathews, and Middlesex counties on the Middle Peninsula in Virginia.

Adoption steps

  1. Visit the Facility and Find a Pet
  2. Meet the Pet
  3. Interview

Additional adoption info

We believe in the love of meeting a pet in person! We no longer accept online applications. One of the first steps is to visit our shelter during open business hours, speak to a staff member about meeting the pet you’re interested in, and then submit an application. See our adoption fees and FAQ at https://gmhumanesociety.org/adopt/

Please call our Adoption Team at 804-693-5520 ext. 102 with questions about the adoption process.
