Areas Safe Haven Bichon and Friends Rescue serves

Safe Haven Bichon and Friends Rescue is headquartered in Barneveld, WI, which is in the southern part of the state near Madison. Most of our dogs are being fostered at the headquarters, but we also have additional foster homes in southern Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota.

You can adopt from us, regardless of distance, as long as you are able to drive or fly to the foster home to do the adoption. We do not ship dogs on planes or send them on transports. Adopters must come to the foster home to adopt.

Additional adoption info

Our adoption fees are based on the age of the dog and are as follows:

Puppies up to 6 months old - $450
6 months to 1 year - $400
1, 2, 3 years - $350
4, 5, 6 years - $300
7, 8, 9 years - $250
10 years and older - $150

Our process includes an application, reference checks, and a home visit. If the applicant lives too far away for us to do the visit ourselves, we find another rescue in your area to help us out.

Once you have gone through the application process and you're approved to adopt, you would then travel to the foster home to meet the dog, sign an adoption contract, pay the adoption fee, and take the dog home. Of course if the meeting doesn't go well, you are not obligated to take the dog.

About Safe Haven Bichon and Friends Rescue

Safe Haven Bichon and Friends Rescue is a foster-based rescue. All dogs live in the comfort of foster homes located in the Midwestern states of Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota, while waiting for their forever homes.

We focus mainly on bichons, but also rescue other small non-shedding breeds such as shih tzu, poodle, maltese, yorkie, lhasa apso, havanese, etc. Our dogs come from a variety of situations--commercial breeder facilities, animal control shelters, and owner surrenders.

All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, microchipped, heartworm tested (4DX test, which also test for tick diseases), dewormed, vaccinated, and have dental cleanings, if needed, before going to their forever homes. We also take care of all other vet issues such as ear infections, eye infections, mammary tumor removal, etc. In other words, when you adopt a dog from us, you are getting a completely vetted dog. We want them to be as happy and healthy as possible before they leave Safe Haven. All vet paperwork is given to adopters at the time of adoption.

Support adoption and rescue. Why go to a dog breeder, cat breeder or pet store to buy a dog or buy a cat when you can adopt?

Why should you adopt?

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
