Rescue FAQs

ZIA Australian Shepherd Rescue is a 501c3 non-profit organization.
Zia Australian Shepherd Rescue supports Australian Shepherd rescue in our local community, typically, but not limited to, New Mexico. We have rescued and successfully placed around 100 Aussies throughout the years. Zia Rescue ensures spays/neuters, shots, heartworm tests and other medical expenses to help ready a dog for adoption. This is a foster-based rescue where dogs live in homes until a matching forever home is found. We ask our adopters to reimburse us for the customary veterinary costs such as spay/neuter, shots, and heartworm tests to help us be able to take another dog into our program!

Additional adoption info

Our screening process includes one or more phone conversations with adopters, and if it seems like a match between potential adopter and dog, is followed by a meet and greet. A home visit may be part of the process.

Once it is clear the adopter and the dog are a match, the adopter fills out an adoption agreement. The essentials of the agreement say that the new owner will care for the dog physically and emotionally, the dog will be an indoor/outdoor dog, the dog will receive regular veterinary care, and that if the dog needs to move to a new home sometime later in life, the adopter will contact Zia first.

Adoption fees vary - typically around $350 depending on the level of medical attention and other expenses the dog requires.
