Rescue FAQs

Begun in 1994, (St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana) the AAS is a small non-profit 501(c)(3), no-kill rescue group dedicated to helping abused, abandoned, orphaned & neglected companion animals by fostering them until they can be adopted into loving homes. We began working in the Picayune/Poplarville, MS, area in late 2005, following Hurricane Katrina. Since then, we have struggled to build our rescue group back up with finding volunteers and placing the many animals in our care into forever homes. Each animal is spayed/neutered, vaccinated & receives any other medical care that may be necessary. Each animal is placed in a foster home. We do not have a facility. These services keep the animals from being unnecessarily euthanized (destroyed) and stops the over population of animals. We work strictly from donations and help of volunteers/foster homes. We are always in need of donations and volunteers/foster homes. The more volunteers & foster homes we have, the more animals we can care for.
Poplarville, MS, Picayune, MS, Slidell, LA, Chalmette, LA, New Orleans, LA, We are registered in both Louisiana and Mississippi. We work mostly in the Picayune/Poplarville, MS and Greater New Orleans areas. We also work on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Additional adoption info

We require an application, from there the application is reviewed, if the applicant is approved, then a contract is completed and an application fee is required. Our adoption fees range from $100-$175. We offer reduced rates for animals that have been with us for over a year and our cat adoption fees are $25. All animals in our care have been fully vetted, spay/neutered and receive the necessary medical care in order to have them adoption ready.
