Rescue FAQs

ASR is an ALL-VOLUNTEER, 501 (c)(3) non-profit, charitable animal rescue. We were founded by three former open-door animal shelter employees in 2008 because at the time, there were no rescue groups in the Santa Cruz area devoted to rescuing the types of animals that our experience taught us needed extra help to be adopted. We are proud to partner with our local animal shelters to relieve overcrowding and reduce euthanasia. One of ASR's achievements is that we rescue hundreds of bottle baby kittens every kitten season. We also rescue special needs animals, check out some of their stories on our website! ASR does not have a brick and mortar animal shelter, therefore all of our animals are in loving foster homes, until they find they are adopted. Because no one at ASR receives a salary, this is truly a labor of love for our team of volunteers.
Animal Shelter Relief (ASR) partners with our local open-admission animal shelters on the Central Coast of California, as well as Silicon Valley and the Central Valley to reduce euthanasia of healthy, adoptable pets.

Additional adoption info

If you are interested in adopting a companion animal from ASR please submit an application via our website. Once the application has been approved, you will be conatcted (usually the same day), and we can set up a meeting in a foster home or plan for you to visit one of our weekend adoption fairs. The adoption fee (which are a tax deductible donation) varies based on species, age, and breed, please contact us for more info.

All animals are spayed/neutered, microchipped, current on age appropriate vaccinations, current on testing (Feline Leukemia and Feline HIV for cats, and Parvo for dogs), and current on flea and worm treatment. All dogs are licensed, and adopters receive a free veterinary exam with our veterinarian.
