The ideal space for Boxer dogs is a home with a large fenced yard where they can goof off, run, and burn off some boundless energy alongside an active pet parent. But having a yard doesn’t mean you’re off the hook for walks or mental enrichment. A Boxer with nothing but a backyard to roam can get bored fast, leading to digging, barking, or other unwanted behaviors.

So does that mean apartment living is off the table? Not necessarily. If you’re in an apartment and thinking of adding a Boxer to your life, just know it’s going to take a big commitment on your part. Being a renter, you’ll need to be more intentional with your commitment to their physical and mental needs. You’ll need to get them out often — think multiple long walks a day, trips to dog-friendly parks, and provide plenty of indoor playtime and mental enrichment (puzzles, training, and snuffle mats).

Senior Boxers (seven and older) tend to be much more chill and suitable for small spaces, though they may still have a goofy streak and the occasional burst of puppy-like silliness.
