Once you’ve found a cute white-coated pup that tugs most at your heart, you’ll need a name for your bestie. This guide was created for exactly that reason: to provide you with several avenues of inspiration to name your new family member. Keep scrolling for hundreds of name ideas — plus, the lowdown on what gives their coats that signature look.

What makes white dogs look so cute and angelic? You can chalk that up to a genetic mutation. There are two pigment cells, eumelanin (brown and black hues) and phaeomelanin (red and yellow tones), which give dogs — and humans, for that matter — their various hair colors. But a mutation in a canine’s MITF gene can block the development of those melanin cells, resulting in white fur. Sometimes this impacts parts of a dog’s coat. Other times, it affects their entire coat.

Over time, this became an aesthetic preference for certain dog lovers. They bred white pups to promote the mutation and voilà: Today we have several breeds that come with wintery coats, such as Malteses, Bichon Frisés, Poodles, among several others.

If you’re looking for a white pup, start your search at Adopt a Pet, where you can specify your search by coat color — but also, if you so wish, by gender, size, breed, age, and location.

Tips on naming your white dog

Just because your dog comes with a name, doesn’t mean you have to keep it. Dogs are smart and can be trained to respond to a new name. Let’s get into a few reasons why you might want to rename them, as well as how to actually get your pup to accept their new moniker.

How to choose a name

Most any name can work for your new dog. But there are a few best practices you might want to keep in mind.

  • Find a name that you’ll like in the long run. Perhaps it’s something that nods to your dog’s personality, reflects their appearance, or even references something you love.

  • Choose a name that’s one or two syllables, which is easier for your dog to respond to. If you come up with a longer name, just shorten it to a nickname.

  • Avoid names that sound like a training command.

  • If you’re not sure about a name, try it out on your dog to see if they react to it.

A step-by-step on how to rename your dog

  • Call them by their old name and their new name together (yes, at the same time). Repeat this for a few days.

  • Once they’re fully responsive, begin to use just the new name.

  • Each time your dog responds to their new name, reward them with positive reinforcement (treats and/or petting), while speaking to them in an encouraging voice.
