Lil Abner is a very loving, affectionate, friendly, happy and upbeat Pit Bull/Dachshund mix who was rescued from the Devore Animal Shelter in his last hour. He weighs 37 lbs., and is very much a low-rider! The cutest thing about Lil Abner is how low to the ground he is, while still being muscular and stocky. The photos may make him look bigger than he is, but Abner is a low, smallish dog, compared to most Pits. Lil Abner is very much a Pit Bull Terrier in his personality, movements, and overall appearance, however, he seems a lot calmer than most average young male Pit types, and of course, he is short! Lil Abner is age one, to one-and-a-half. He will not continue to grow, but he could widen if fed too much. Right now, Lil Abner looks great!
Lil Abner enjoys being near you, or at least access where you are, if need be. It is not that he won’t go out and explore the yard, he will; but he wants to be able to come back in and see where you are, and not be excluded to the yard, even if with the other dogs. Though friendly towards, and playful with all dogs, Lil Abner wants to be included with the human pack. If I am working at the computer, Lil Abner is laying on a pet bed right near me. In addition to being very sweet, Abner can be goofy, and make you laugh out loud. But he can also be a bit timid. He still has a tendency to back away from new people, or, if he thinks he is in trouble with me (which he usually is not – I’m probably just correcting him and he gets a little scared). Lil Abner enjoys playing with the other dogs and he will also play ball and bring it back to you. Sometimes, he plays on his own, chewing on a durable toy.
Lil Abner is very dog friendly. I trust Lil Abner to hang out in my little dog pack too. He hangs with the bigger dogs, and the small dogs. He has very seldom barked and generally speaking, limits his destruction to toys alone. Lil Abner eats and sleeps in a 32 inch long wire crate. A crate is a must for his adoption, to help him transition to a new place. He is crated if I have to leave the house for a while. Lil Abner has been perfect in his potty habits; however, I do always keep a door open. He knows to go outside if he has to go potty and he does not mark in the house.
The best fit for Lil Abner is a home with another very friendly dog. He is not going to be happy as a yard dog waiting all day for his people to come home. I think he would enjoy conventional training, but he is still too young to be a running dog (bone platelets still growing – dogs should wait until age two for any exercise other than hiking or walking). If you have always wanted a Pit Bull type, but did not want the size, energy, or the challenge that sometimes comes with the breed, Lil Abner may be your guy!
