My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

8/13/14 - I'VE BEEN ADOPTED!

Adoption Fee: $350

Fostered in Kentucky

Age: 5 years

Weight: 5.8 lbs.

e-mail: kyyorkiemom@yahoo.com

8/6/14 - Dixie's foster mom attended the Reliant Dog Show in Houston and brought back some goodies. Dixie wanted to model them off. Isn't she adorable in her new sweater and hair bow?

7/2/14 - Dixie is getting spayed and having her 5 teeth cleaned today. Then she will be ready for adoption.

6/4/14 - Ms. Dixie has been in her foster home for about a month now and is getting more comfortable and showing more of her personality. We know she will still be evolving in the days, week and months to come, but she is definitely making great strides. She is fine around the other dogs in the house and is no trouble at all to them. She doesn’t try to play with them since she doesn’t know what that is about. She has made a friend in one of the pups in the home and laid in one of the dog beds with her recently. She also doesn’t play with toys..... yet, but did sniff one recently and held it in her mouth.

In the eating department, Dixie’s was probably limited on her food for so long that she eats it like it will be her last meal. Her foster mom feeds her small meals so as not to upset her belly. She will eventually learn that this buffet will never end.

She seems to like men and women and is content to follow her FM or FD around the house. FM got her first kiss the other day and was so excited. Dixie will bark if the others do to follow suit. Laps are something she has decided that she likes and will sit in yours 24/7 if you allow it. She also just loves to be held and will let ANYONE hold her. She is a gentle baby that has a submissive demeanor and extremely sweet disposition.

The potty habits will take a little longer since she was used to going where she lived since where she lived was the only place she had. She will potty in the grass or on a pee pad, but for now, will also squat randomly with her diaper on. She does have an issue with wet grass. Seems someone doesn’t want her tootsies wet. Number 2 right now is reserved for the pee pad. These habits will get better with time. She is learning a lot and these things take time.

One thing is for certain, Dixie appreciates her life now. She is so loving. This is one that is truly rescue and would be a great baby to add to a quiet, relaxed home.

5/26/14 - Dixie is becoming a happier baby with each passing day. She is starting to blossom. She seems to love people and laps are her favorite location. She does fine co-existing with other dogs, but we really don't think she will every be a playmate for one.

She is still afraid to be picked up if you are standing over her, but if you sit, she will come to you to be picked up. Hovering over her seems to be scary for her. Another scary thing right now is going through doorways, not many of those to be seen at her old job. Once you clocked in, you didn't clock out. She seems to like her new (probably only) name, Dixie, because she is starting to answer to it as if she finally has a reason for being.

She will be going to the vet this week for her vaccines and left is her rabies, spay and dental. All of this is being taken very slow as we are still trying to put some much needed weight on this sweet bag of bones.

We are accepting applications, but she will not be able to join her new family until after all of her vetting is complete and we have learned more about her personality and taught her more on how to enjoy being spoiled.

5/6/14 - I know I might be a little young to be retired, but when you’ve had my workload and profession, you’d retire young too. My last occupation was in production and my position was volunteer, since I never got paid. So, I decided to leave that job and some nice ladies in the area helped me take up residence in a nice foster home. These people at YHR are going to find me a family where I don’t have to work at all. I will be taken care of from here on out and won't have any babies to mother anymore. Not to harp on my condition, but I even have frost bite on my ears, nose, and tail---so that obviously lets you know that I didn't spend my nights curled up by a fire with a good book. Did you know I’m proficient at walking on wire cage bottoms because that is the kind of life I lived? Now I’m learning how to be potty trained and living the life of luxury. It is amazing to me that there are laps for naps and real floors in which to walk.

I went to the vet for the first time (probably ever) and foster mom is very surprised that I am heartworm negative. I am very emaciated right now and the vet says I need to put on at least 1.5 - 2 lbs. before getting any additional vetting done. So my job now is to eat, rest and be loved. I can handle that. Anyway, you’ll hear more about me later, but in the meantime just wanted to say hello.
