My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Jkie, a good looking Golden Retriever that has been called personable, friendly, and gregarious to all. He’s good with strangers and really loves to be around the man of the house. When his foster dad is working in his home office, Jkie lays down right next to him to make sure he can keep tabs on him. If his foster dad goes outside, Jkie follows closely behind. You know, the typical velcro Golden we all know and love. He loves the rest of the family too but Jkie just thinks there is something special about being best buds with the man of the house.

He has really loved the affection lavished on him by his foster sister and her friends and is proving to be a good student by learning a handful of tricks including sit, down, stay, go in a circle, etc. His foster sister has working with him for about two months and has making great progress. Jkie is house and crate trained. He goes in his crate willingly at bedtime and sometimes before then if he decides he is tuckered out.

He gets along well with the other dog in his foster home and since he doesn’t have a lot of energy, they mostly ignore each other. Occasionally he gets a spurt of energy and will try to play with her. He bounces around her and nuzzles at her ear to try to engage her. Once his energy runs out, he’s looking for a nice place to take a nap. While his foster family does not have a cat, they are confident that he would be fine with a cat in the home as Jkie doesn’t chase after cats when on a leash. Once, during a walk, he approached and sniffed a neighborhood cat that is very dominant. The cat hissed and scratched his nose. Since then, if Jkie sees that cat on the sidewalk he goes way out of his way to avoid it. He’s a lover, not a fighter.

Jkie is okay on the leash. Not great but not bad either. He doesn’t have a lot of energy and doesn’t seem to relish the walks. That being said, he doesn’t like being left at home if his dog sibling gets a walk. He won’t run out front and pull like most dogs and instead just walks quietly beside you. Occasionally he decides he’s done and just stops and will resist forward progress quite adamantly. He’ll do this on average once or twice on each walk.

Jkie has been diagnosed with Cushing’s Disease (click here to learn more about Cushing’s), an adrenal gland disorder that can effect dogs. He has responded well to treatment and is getting healthier every day. Cushing’s is a lifelong disease and Jkie will always need treatment for it. Cushing’s is known to increase appetite and Mr. Jkie took advantage of the disease and put on a bunch of weight. He has thus far lost 12 pounds while in the care of his foster family and has some more weight to lose to get happier and healthier. This hunger also means that his foster family has to be vigilant to ensure that counter areas are clean and that trash is secured. His body is telling him to eat and Jkie doesn’t know any better. He has not been shown to be destructive, just a hungry dude. He would also do best in a home with a doggie door as Cushing’s can cause increased trips to the backyard and even though he hasn’t had any issues at his foster parents’ home, a doggie door would make his home life easier. Finally, he also has severe skin allergy issues that are responding very well to medications. He gets itchy until the medicine kicks in.

If you are looking for a low key dog that is happy to be part couch potato and part velcro, Jkie might just be the dog for you. He’ll need some medications during his life but look at that face? Who wouldn’t want to have that attached to their hip during the day?
