My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

We love our Butters! How could you not? On a recent trip to Animal Care and Control, intake directors were strolling the rescue pavilion looking for dogs to transfer into the NLOL program when they came across possibly the most obese beagle they'd ever laid eyes on. Poor Butters had been dropped off by his owner because their "landlord wouldn't allow them to have a dog anymore" and unfortunately his last stop would have probably been ACC unless a private rescue like NLOL Chicago stepped in. Of course we were happy to - this dude is quite a catch!

Sweet Butters weighs in at approximately 46 lbs when his ideal weight should be around 25 lbs. Whoa! Fortunately, beside the obvious weight issue, Butters is healthy as a horse. He looooooves to get petted and lives for back scratches from our volunteers. Butters' sheer size prevents him from scratching or grooming himself for the most part,
so any human attention to those matters is greatly appreciated. Butters isn't really a big fan of being picked up right now as it is too painful for him with his weight being what it is. We think once he drops a few pounds, he won't have such an issue with it and would probably love that sort of human affection.

From what we've learned so far about Butters, he seems to get along with dogs, LOVES people and more than anything loves to let out his beagle yodel-howl, which is quite entertaining. Arooo! Butters is also a fan of walking, though he tires out quickly. He will need a family to give him lots of walks. In the beginning, short walks will be key until he can build up to longer more aerobic walks. Because he is so overweight it is important to not push him too hard too fast. Just like with people, with a good diet, not too many fatty treats and proper exercise, Butters will easily drop from his current dangerous weight to a fit and trim 5 year old Beagle!
