My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Piper is a Lab mix and if I had to guess her mix (and of course I do), it’s Dane. She is about 19 months old. She is tall and leggy and has a bit of dane feature to her face. I can’t say it’s true, just a guess based on working with her.
She is gentle and sweet and rarely comes up on people, but when she does it’s with love and easy up for a hug or brief face to face look so she can identify with you. She knows her sit, down, off, shake commands like a pro.
She retrievers and drops a toy on command most of the time. She loves taking toys from the box and carrying them outside to interact in play with her humans.
She’s acceptable on leash walks, but a tad wiley in that everything new is interesting and some things are a bit scary to her. A moment of showing her something new and telling her it’s okay pays off quickly as she learns really fast. She’s fine with car and bikes passing, she’s fine in passing other dogs, it’s the new things that make her worried. A minute of time telling her it’s okay and she’s passed it. She’s also over her fear or sewer drains and golf carts on sidewalks – which were both new to her on arrival.
She is not 100% house trained, but she spent a lot of her life bumbling from place to place, including a few months in boarding while trying to find compassion and understanding from humans. She wasn’t born perfect but seeks the understanding human to help her get that way. She is good at going potty outside, but in moments of excitement and environments with many dogs, she simply needs to be first to go out and she’s good. Three to four outings and day and she’s great in home.
She is very good with kids and fine with most animals in passing – even the rooster across the road doesn’t phase her anymore. We’re introduced her to a house cat and she is okay as long the cat is okay, if the cat gets pushy or too in her face, she just wants to keep on going and get by it. She’s not cat aggressive at all, she’s cat ignoring.
She can interact with other dogs who get on a play level with her but is unsure of those who aren’t active or entertainment anymore (seniors). She takes their cues to go away and will, but she’ll ask them again just to be sure.
She is fine with hands in her bowl and interaction with food. She is silent in crate and sleeps quietly in one at night.
Piper is good dog in need of someone patient and understanding of her past. Her loves pays off immensely and especially when she knows she’s done well. If you are looking for a big dog (not huge, but big) who wants to learn your ways and your love and one that is willing to do both, she’s the right one for you. If you expect a perfect dog that needs no training or encouragement, she is not the one for you. She is definitely the dog that pays in love and shows you how much a little time and patience can reward you with.
She has no fear or humans and is willing to make her bond with anyone willing to give it.
We would expect that any adopter of Piper would at least attend a training session with her. She’s not a project dog, (she’s passed that) but she’s a good dog who will be a great dog in the right hands. She has NO negative behaviors just uncertainty that a good dog-home and family love will solve once they establish a loving bond with her.
