My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

My name is Ben and I am a sweet male beagle that needs to find a new home. I am approx. 7 years old and weigh about 28 lbs. I was living in a foster home prior to coming to Penny Angels on 4-30-16. Since my foster mom knew me best, this is what she wanted you to know about me:

“Ben and another beagle were dropped off in the overnight box at a rural, euthanizing shelter in South Carolina. Ben’s buddy was quickly adopted but no one came for Ben. Why? The shelter staff said he was a great dog – very friendly with people and other dogs. Ahhh, but Ben was a little older and starting to show some white in his face, but more than that, Ben had a large growth on his abdomen. Most people saw this and turned away. Penny Angels could not. This boy deserved a chance, so Ben was pulled from the shelter and went to a foster home in South Carolina.

“With the financial assistance from RADAR (Raising Aid for Dogs at Risk), Ben made a trip to the vet and it was determined that he would need to have not just the one tumor, but two, removed. Surgery day came. The tumors were removed. Good news! The tumors were benign and Ben was given an A-OK to start looking for his forever home!

“Ben is one of the friendliest pups ever! His tail was wagging when I first met him and it hasn’t stopped since. Sometimes it even wags in his sleep. He has an outgoing, fun-loving personality that is surprising for an older boy that appears to have led the life of a hunting dog. You will often find him running through the yard or the house with a toy in his mouth.

“Snuggle bug is the best way to describe Ben. I have never had a foster that loved to snuggle as much as Ben. At bedtime, he curls up next to me and doesn’t move all night. He makes it hard to get up in the morning because you don’t want to disturb the sleeping angel beside you. You can often find him napping on the bed with his head between the pillows. It’s hard to describe the comfort he gives to you when he is beside you. There is just something about this boy that makes you feel calm and at ease.

“Ben is housetrained. He picked up on that within just a few days. He is such a smart dog. He likes to go on leash walks but he, like most beagles, loves to sniff and sniff and sniff. I never really attempted to crate train Ben because he was such a good dog. He doesn’t bother anything when he is left alone – except maybe a few toys. Ben LOVES toys. It was so precious to see him play with toys for the first time.

“Ben loves everybody and every dog he meets! He blended into our pack perfectly – just like he had always been here. Beagle or non-beagle, large or small, male or female – it doesn’t matter. He gets along with them all. It is beautiful to see him running across the yard with the pack.

“Ben would love a home with another dog to keep him company. He also would greatly appreciate a home where he is not crated and allowed to curl up beside you on your bed. I really don’t have the words to tell you what a fantastic dog Ben is. You just have to meet him and see his tail wag and then you will understand. Please consider taking the time to meet this wonderful dog. You won’t regret it.”
