My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

*** ADOPTION PENDING ***

Thomas is a sweet and spunky Cocker Spaniel mix. He was picked up on a recent trip to Animal Care and Control. Poor little Thomas wasn't in the best shape upon intake and ended up spending two weeks at the vet’s office having his shattered tail amputated and clearing up some infections. Thomas is now in his new foster home and doing great with his recovery. After a bath and a good brushing, Thomas has shown to be the handsome fella!

After two days in his foster home, Thomas began responding to his name and coming when he was called. He quickly picked up on how to sit for treats and is eager to learn more. He is a very happy little dog; his tail wags non-stop, he loves walks and trips to the park and gets along great with his foster brother, Max. He's not yet been tested with cats but is great with people and has so far been fine with children (although he hasn’t been extensively tested with kids). Although timid in new situations, Thomas adjusts very quickly to new environments. He is very smart and remembers things after doing them one time: he knows which door goes where, where he lives, which leash is his.

Thomas has a great appetite and has shown no food aggression. Although he tends to be a little possessive of treats and chew bones, he does surrender food and loves to "assist" in the kitchen, promptly cleaning up anything that may fall or drip on the floor. Thomas does have a tendency to beg and demand food be given to him by barking, which his foster mom is working on. He is very responsive to treats and eager to please, hence very trainable.

Thomas is very affectionate; he likes to get his belly, face, and behind scratched and enjoys any physical attention he can get. He enjoys snuggling and prefers to be in a room with a person. He follows his foster mom around nudging her with his nose or giving kisses. He’s very active and enjoys all kinds of toys, especially anything that squeaks. Fetch is his favorite game and he will bring his favorite toys to the door when greeting visitors. He does have a mischievous side - he likes to open doors with his paw and check out new spaces – but is not at all destructive or loud. Thomas barks when he hears other dogs barking, but is not excessively vocal otherwise. He does enjoy down time and lounging in the evening. Napping or chewing on a chew toys are some of his favorite past times.

Being a rescue dog with an unknown past, Thomas is working on a few things. It took him a very short time to figure out his new schedule and he has no accidents while at home all day. Due to having spent almost two weeks in a crate at the vet’s office, he is not fond of being crated and will cry if locked in a crate. It would be preferable that he could have freedom in his new home or be gated in a smaller area. He is working on overcoming his fear - he has been spending a little time in his crate each night, going in by himself and laying down with his head in the door so it cannot be closed.

Overall Thomas is a very sweet, smart, spunky boy who will make a great pet for someone looking for an active smaller dog that enjoys being part of the action. He would do great as a single dog or a second pet. Overall he is just a very sweet boy who really wants to be part of a family.
