My story

Please read the entire bio for this rescue, it will provide all the information that one needs to decide if they would like to apply to adopt from SCMR.

Adoption Fee: $150.00

Humphrey is 8 years old and weighs 9 pounds. We feel he is a mix between a Bichon, Maltese and Poodle. He has a cute underbite that is not a problem, giving him a cute square jaw look!  He gets along great with his foster siblings, but it is unknown how he would be with cats.

Humphrey is very sweet, loves attention, and he is one smart little boy teaching himself to use the doggie door to potty outside.... well most of the time!  He is very active and loves to explore, so anyone adopting him would have to child proof their home.

The above statements are all the sweet and loving things about Humphrey, but there is some sad news.  Humphrey has poly-arthritis and there is no cure for it..  Yes, at just three years old he has arthritis.  His doctors suspect his kind of arthritis was caused by some sort of infection that settled in his joints causing swelling and pain in his ankles, knees, wrists and elbows.  It is unknown when he developed this condition, but it has been long enough for him to lose most of his muscle mass in his legs and shoulders causing his muscles to atrophy.

For his pain and discomfort he is taking, Lefluncomide suspension and Adequan.  The Adequan is an injection that must be taken for life.   For now, he is not in as much pain and is able to get around much better, but because of the loss of muscle, he is not able to straighten his back legs. This will be a life long condition, and anyone adopting him must be willing and able to care for what his life will be.  He will never be able to be taken for walks, he is unable to jump onto laps or a chair or jump down, and he is not one to want to snuggle.   We have been told, because of the extensive poly-arthritis, his life expectancy will be much less than normal.

For now, the arthritis swelling is under control, there is no way to know if or when his arthritis will flair up again.  He will always have to be on medicine, so any family adopting him will need to understand this possibility and be willing to take care of any life changes that may develop for him in the future.

He also tends to want to bite and is food aggressive, meaning he will fight and bite over food.  He does have a nasty habit of eating feces's, called coprophagia.  It's difficult to control him with other dogs in the home because he is very quick.  He will stop if told no but to catch him in the act can be challenging.

Humphrey is now enjoying life in Gainesville, FL taking in the sun until his forever family takes him home.

Out-of-state adoptions are possible; however, the approved adoptive home is responsible for making the necessary arrangements to pick up their new little one.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

To be considered to adopt one of our babies, please fill out an APPLICATION. A PDF version of the application is also available for download. Adopting any animal takes a lot of commitment. We require an application, reference check, home visit, and adoption donations depending upon the age of the animal and the medical expenses. Each dog has had all vaccinations, been dewormed, heartworm tested (and treated if necessary), dental (if needed), spay/neuter, and any other medical attention he/she needs. The adoption fee helps recover a PORTION of the money spent on each rescued animal.
We need COMPLETED applications; we cannot start the adoption approval process unless we have a fully completed application.

If you do not supply complete information on your APPLICATION, we do not have time to track it all down. Vet contact information on your application is very important, please include it.

PLEASE CAREFULLY READ THE BIO OF ANY DOG IN WHICH YOU ARE INTERESTED SINCE THERE MAY BE ADOPTION RESTRICTIONS. We do NOT adopt to homes with children under the age of 10 years or homes with Electric Fences.

Homes with fenced yards are given preference to those without (all other things being equal).

Please understand that this is a volunteer effort and we all work full time in addition to doing rescue. Any help in speeding up the adoption process is appreciated. We will get back to you as soon as possible.

** NOTE** We do NOT encourage giving pets as GIFTS. However, you may pay the adoption fee as a 'gift' for your special someone, but we will require an adoption application to be completed by the adopter (recipient of your 'gift').

Our dogs come to us from various sources including shelters. We do not always know the full history of the dog, some have come from abusive or neglectful situations. We will share as much information on the dogs as we can with 'approved prospective homes'.

When an application is approved, the home check goes well, and all vet references and application information checks out, a signed and notarized contract is required to finalize the adoption process. MS Word and PDF versions of our Adoption Contract are available for download from our website, scmradoption.com.

Go meet their pets

Our dogs are in wonderful foster homes, throughout the US, primarily in the southeast.. We are sorry, but there is no "shelter" available for you to visit.

We are committed to finding the best home possible for each of our little ones, so that they don't end up in a similar situation down the road. Out of state adoptions are possible. The new owner is required to help with the transportation of the dog though, as we will not ship them. Additionally, all dogs requiring transportation must have a crate or seatbelt harness for their safety.

FOSTER A PET
Can't adopt? Consider being a FOSTER PARENT. All foster homes undergo the same screening that an adoptive home will. You must be committed to the potential lifetime care of the animals and be responsible for helping select and qualify their forever homes. IF YOU CAN FOSTER, please fill out a FOSTER APPLICATION.

More about this rescue

We are dedicated to rescuing and caring for Maltese and other toy breeds (as room allows) who are either rescued from shelters, found as strays, or no longer wanted by their family.

We are a 501(c)(3) charitable organization so all donations are tax deductible. These little dogs need YOUR help now. SCMR takes in many "extreme-needs" Maltese and our vet bills can be very high. Every little bit helps. Additionally we can always use things such as dog beds, heartworm preventative, flea preventative, harnesses etc. Donations can be made out to SCMR and mailed to:
