My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

DEXTER IN OKLAHOMA CITY, OK HAS BEEN ADOPTED!

Dexter in Oklahoma City, OK is a sweet, handsome 7 yr. old who was surrendered to NBGR when his family had work schedule changes that became a conflict. Dexter weighs in at 20 lbs, and his foster mom is helping him lose weight with food changes, portion control, and exercise.

Dexter loves being outside, running around in the backyard and rolling in the grass. He also loves romping and playing with his foster siblings. It would be great if he had an equally playful dog companion in his new home. He enjoys walks and is working on not pulling on his leash. He likes to go for car rides and has no issues riding in a crate while out and about.

When his foster mom is at work or away from home, Dexter is most comfortable in an enclosed area, like a laundry room, instead of a crate. He’s pretty savvy, so the gate/barrier needs to be high enough and built with vertical bars so he cannot climb over.

Dexter has a fondness for the kitchen trash, so it’s important that his new family makes sure that the trash is kept where Dexter cannot get into it. He is VERY inquisitive as well, so you will need to keep a close eye on him so he doesn't get himself into trouble.

Dexter is doing pretty well with house training, and we believe he will thrive with a routine schedule. When his foster mom has to be away for extended periods, Dexter uses the puppy pads she provides. Like all newcomers, he will need to be watched closely in his new environment so he doesn’t have the opportunity to make mistakes. Dexter’s foster mom sometimes uses a belly band for safe measure.

According to his previous family, Dexter is good with cats. In his foster home, we are finding that he tends to show more interest than they might like. The previous family also says he does well with children but has a tendency to get a little rambunctious. We have not had Dexter around children since he has been in our program, but that description would make us hesitant to place him in a home with small children, resident or visitor.

Dexter adores human attention and being petted. He loves spending time on the sofa hanging out, but he doesn’t need to be in your lap. Snuggling close to you is what he enjoys most.

He follows his foster mom from room to room, keeping a close eye on her. Right now they are working on clicker training. He’s doing very well with sit and is working on other commands.

Dexter will be a delightful addition for the right family. We feel a two- and four-legged family that enjoys taking long walks then snuggling on the sofa would be right up his alley.

Dexter is fully vetted and ready to start an exciting journey with his new family. Do you have a little extra room in your heart and home for this handsome guy?

Keep in mind that we prefer to place dogs within driving distance of where they are being fostered. If someone from outside the local area is approved for adoption, they must be willing to fly in to get the dog and that can only happen if the dog is stable enough to travel in the cabin with the passenger.
