My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Delilah is a bright-eyed, curious, butt wiggling squirt of a dog. A purebred Dachshund, she weighs in at 11 pounds. She is a senior at 12 years old, but you would not know it from her behavior. She has the enthusiasm and general demeanor of a young dog.

True to her doxie nature, Delilah’s very favorite thing to do is eat. Every day she does the breakfast boogie woogie, where she jumps up energetically and repeatedly while making a trilling sound. At the dance of dinner, she gets up on her back legs and twirls, after first making a mighty effort to get at the other dogs’ food bowls.

Also true to her doxie nature, Delilah’s second favorite thing to do is chase squirrels in the back yard. At a towering 6 inches high, there’s no chance of her ever catching one, but there is no daunting that squirrel-hunting spirit!

With food and important activities out of the way, Delilah is ready for you to sit down on the couch, at which point she will stand on back legs with her paws beside you and her large, pleading eyes begging you to pick her up for cuddle time. In this activity, she never fails. Your butt on the couch is her cue. You sit down for 30 seconds to tie your shoes, Delilah is there begging to come up on the couch beside you with her little broken tail swishing back and forth like a hummingbird’s wings.

Delilah is a well-mannered dog. She lives in a foster home with four other dogs and gets along with all of them. She loves people, though she’s a little shy around new people. She is house-trained and potty pad-trained. She is non-destructive. . .unless you leave a trash can out, in which case all bets are off. She rarely barks—only when she perceives a threat to the house. She sleeps in the bed with dogmom and the other dogs.

Delilah and her Yorkie sister were surrendered to a local shelter by the owners in very bad condition. The shelter would not even undertake medical treatment of them. We picked them up half an hour before they were scheduled to be euthanized, and I am thankful every day that we did. Delilah is everything you want from a Dachshund—funny, loving, adorable, just a bit mischievous.

As an older dog, she does have a few issues. She is not spayed and can’t be because of the risks of anesthesia. She also has a heart murmur, but it is not life-threatening. Our vet assesses that she still has some good years left in her.

We are hoping to find Delilah a home where somebody is retired or there most of the time. Other dogs—or cats, for that matter—are fine. She is very gentle with all other creatures. This sweet girl who was thrown away still has much to live for, and much love to give.
