My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Squirtle is a very special boy who was found at four months old wandering an apartment complex, meowing for food. While the other cats wouldn't let anyone come near them, this guy allowed one of our volunteers, a complete stranger, to scoop him up and place him in a carrier! He was purring all the way home and was instantly happy to have human attention - and food!

When we took him for vetting, though, he tested positive for feline leukemia (FeLV), which was confirmed when we retested a month later. This does mean Squirtle needs a home with no other cats (unless they are FeLV positive as well). FeLV isn't contagious to people or other animals, though, and the great news is that he gets along wonderfully with dogs and ADORES children and pretty much every single person he meets.

He is living in a foster home with four young, active children, and from the very first day he arrived he was happy to let even the toddler carry him around the house! He doesn't mind the two big dogs one bit, and just wants to be by your side all the time. He likes to sleep curled up beside you at night, and when the kids are taking naps he'll walk over to them and curl up beside them too!

Many places euthanize a cat as soon as they test positive for FeLV. We could never do that: we believe that all cats deserve a chance at a loving home, no matter how long or short their time. While this condition is *likely* to shorten Squirtle's life, he can still live a normal life and doesn't require special treatments or accommodations other than a few extra check-ups at the vet. (You can read more about FeLV here: https://bestfriends.org/stories-blog-videos/latest-news/feline-leukemia-misconceptions)

Squirtle is a purring machine, a social butterfly, and a complete lovebug. He may not live as long the average cat, but we can promise you - he will give you more than ten lifetimes' worth of love.
