My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

ARTEMIS – FOSTER AND FOREVER HOME NEEDED
Female / Black Lab mix / 3-4yrs / 48lbs
House trained / good with cats / good with calm dogs (slow and proper introduction required) / Kids 14+

Background: Artemis adjusted well to her new home, though she had some mild destructive behaviour the first night (scratching the door); after that she was very well-behaved for over 4 months. After going through a severe thunderstorm, she started showing noise-related anxiety which progressively worsened over the summer. During weather events she is almost non-functioning (shaking / trembling, panting, drooling, ignores some commands). Her anxiety also includes separation; where previously she was fine left alone for 8+ hours, she is now unable to be left alone for any length of time, especially during weather events. She is the sweetest dog, she loves people, she just needs a lot of attention, specialized care, and most importantly a QUIET ENVIRONMENT.

***Artemis cannot be crated, and may hurt herself trying to get out. She may also try to escape a yard, so it must be securely fenced.***

Artemis is submissive, especially around men. She loves meeting new people and will go up to them for pets, will accept treats when she is not nervous, and loves to lick faces. She is a bit wary around children. Toddlers and pre-school children bother her with noise and walking over her/on her bed. She may growl/snap if not left alone.

Artemis is fine with other dogs that do not get in her face or are too rowdy. She enjoys being around calm dogs but will need a slow and proper introduction. She ignores cats.

She may bolt out the door if given a chance, so in a new place she will need to be watched carefully by doors. Initially, she was pulling very hard on leash; after a few months of training she is an excellent leash dog (with the person who trained her, and good with other people). She will heel and sit on leash, can untangle herself, and will generally walk beside you with only occasional corrections. She will lunge at squirrels and shies away from cars when walking on non-sidewalk roadways. She does know how to pull out of her collar if she is overly excited/scared so we recommend a collar or leash that will prevent this at all times.

She loves being outside with other people/dogs (except during bad weather). She is not really interested in games/toys. She will chase objects but not retrieve. She does not use chew toys but enjoys puzzles that reward her with food. She generally likes to be sleeping alone or with other people depending on her mood; usually a few times during the day she will approach someone for pets or treats. At first, she was not very food-motivated but once she settled in food is a very easy way to get her attention.

Artemis needs the following to have the best chance to adjust:
1) a quiet environment (no busy streets, commercial activity) and a well-sound-proofed home against weather noise is beneficial; she is especially bothered by high wind, thunder, and rain (even a noisy AC system may bother her)
2) someone home all the time, and able to work with her waking up at night when nervous
3) other dogs for company may help; she seemed to do well in her first foster home with two other dogs, however she has not spent significant time with other pets and she does need a lot of attention to feel safe
4) she loves cuddles, laying on the couch and having her belly rubbed and touching you with her paw; this is one of the few ways to calm her down when she is upset but doesn't always work
