My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Sweet Lola is a Maltese. Lola is 9 years old and 13 pounds. She is being fostered in St. Augustine. Lola’s adoption fee is $225.

UPDATED BIO 02/23/2018: Sweet Lola has been in UYR for 2-1/2 months now. She came into our group almost completely blind from cataracts, and with the generous and amazing support of our wonderful donors, we raised enough money for her to have cataract surgery on one eye. Her surgery was on 01/30 and although there were a few bumps along the road, Lola is doing great. She recently saw the doggie eye doctor and he was very pleased with the results of the surgery. She was cleared to go without the dreaded e-collar, which not only pleased Lola very much, but made her foster mom and dad very happy as well.

The first thing upon arriving home from the eye doctor, Lola was put into the sink and had a much-needed bath, and then a nice walk. She still needs several eye meds several times a day, but not as often as before. She will continue to make weekly trips to the eye doctor for now to ensure that all is well. Lola will see the local vet in several weeks to have her thyroid values checked again to ensure that they are closer to normal.

Lola is such a happy girl now that she has vision again. She enjoys traveling in the car, which is good since there have been quite a few road trips back and forth to the vet. She will fall asleep in the car and not awaken until she is at her destination. What a sweet girlie! Stay tuned for more updates on this adorable little girlie.

UPDATED BIO 02/08/2018: Lola had her much-anticipated cataract surgery on one eye on January 30th and is doing very well. She will go back to see the doggie ophthalmologist in a few days for a re-check; she now enjoys going for car rides. Lola can see better each and every day and it’s amazing for her foster mom to witness this. She is tolerating the 4 rounds of 6 different eye meds and 2 pills she must have every day since she knows she will get a treat when finished, so she is a little trooper. She is wagging her tail more each day and becoming much more active.

Lola is now going for walks and asking to go outside each day. She is always following her foster mom around and is very curious about her surroundings, especially now that she can see the squirrels in the yard and enjoys barking at them now that she can see them. It’s so amazing to see the progress in sweet Lola as her vision in one eye gets clearer each day.

Lola and her foster parents want to thank each and every person who donated towards her cataract surgery so that she could see again. She still has to see the eye specialist every week to ensure all is well, and these visits and the eye drops she must have are expensive. UYR is only able to afford cataract surgery and the follow-up visit if donations are made to pay for this, so any donation is truly appreciated. Thank you again for our generous donors!

UPDATED BIO 01/11/2018: Lola has been seen by the doggie ophthalmologist in Jacksonville, FL. He agrees with the ophthalmologist that she previously saw – he also feels that sight can be restored in Lola’s left eye. She will have her surgery on Jan 30th. It is expected that she will have vision within 3-7 days post-surgery. Most of the funds have been raised so that Lola will have the opportunity to see again – THANK YOU to all the generous donors that helped to make this happen. We are all anxious to know that this sweet little princess will have her sight restored.

Even though Lola knew something was up when she was taken to the specialist’s office, she sat down like a sweet little girl and waited for her turn to see the doctor. Even though there were other animals coming in and out, Lola continued to be patient - waiting for her turn. She is currently on a regimen of twice-daily drops until her surgery, and of course, there will be several additional drops after her surgery. Lola is such a sweetheart and doesn’t mind all the drops. Lola has some difficult days ahead of her, but with lots of prayers and the help of our wonderful donors, Lola will be able to see again.

PLEASE NOTE: At this time, Lola can only be adopted in the Jacksonville, FL area since she will need to have follow-up visits with the doggie ophthalmologist for six (6) months after her surgery.

UPDATED BIO 01/08/2018: Lola came into UYR almost 4 weeks ago. Her foster mom knows sweet Lola must have been very confused about her move from her original foster home after only a short time, but Lola will soon learn that she was moved so that she will hopefully have a chance to see once again. The move was necessary to relocate her so that she was closer to the doggie ophthalmologist that may be able to restore sight in one of her eyes. Her consultation is in a few days to determine if restoring her vision is possible.

Foster mom keeps a close eye on Lola and notices how she compensates for her blindness by listening intently to what is happening around her. She has also noticed that Lola may be hearing- impaired, but neither of these two things stops this little princess from trying her best to enjoy life. Foster mom knows that Lola has slowly adjusted to losing her vision, but she is hopeful that the surgeon will be able to restore some sight to give Lola a better quality of life.

When Lola is outside where there are no obstacles to get in her way, she enjoys rolling around in the grass and always finds the ball to entertain her. This little precious girl, who is otherwise very healthy, is determined to enjoy her life in whatever way she can. United Yorkie Rescue wants Lola to have the best life possible, so we are asking for prayers that Lola will be a candidate for cataract surgery. UYR and Lola want to thank all the amazing donors who have contributed money so that Lola has this opportunity to have surgery, but there will be on-going costs involved with drops and follow-up visits ….. if you are moved by Lola’s determination and resilience and would like to donate to this sweet little girl, please know that no donation is too small. Stay tuned on how Lola is doing ….
