My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

What is your name? My name is Astro! 🌟

How old are you? I am not sure, but I am probably around two years old.

How much do you weigh? Around 55 pounds.

What do you look like? My foster mom thinks I am a hound (a beagle!) / pit mix … I’m absolutely adorable! I am tan and white (my coat is beautiful) with golden honey brown eyes.

What do you like to eat? I love all food and treats as long as they are good quality – I deserve the best!

What kind of personality do you have? I have it all – good looks and a super sweet personality! I have met small children, men, and women, and I love them all. I can be a little sensitive with fast movements until I know you mean no harm. I am smart, but I can be stubborn – show me a treat! But most of all, I am incredibly sweet.

Describe your perfect day: It’s structured – I wake up, go potty and eat breakfast … then I play or hang out on the back porch. I eat dinner in the evening, enjoy house time, and get a little bit of training on basics like sit and down.

What is your favorite toy? I like any toys!

Do you know any tricks? I don’t really know any tricks yet – I just practice manners and patience!

What scares you? My foster mom has noticed that I am sensitive to sudden movements. But other than that, I am pretty brave, especially with foster mom’s encouragement.

Have you been around children? Do you like them? Yep! And Yep!

Do you like cats? I have not been around a cat, but the park near my house is filled with squirrels, and I would like to know what they are but they don’t stay still long enough for me to get to them.

How do you feel about other dogs? I have been properly introduced to two adult dogs and a puppy, and I had the best time!

If you could be anywhere in the world, where would it be? With my furever family. I know that I am going to make a great family member.

How is your health? Well, I had a pretty gnarly fractured leg when I was first brought to the shelter. I was fortunate enough to be selected to receive care through the UC Davis Fracture Program, and I am perfectly healed! Other than that, I am in perfect health. Now that my foster mom has been able to increase my walking time, I have gotten really tone – you can see how beautiful I am from my pictures!

Who do you live with in your foster home and who is your closest companion? I live with my foster mom, her resident dogs, and another NBBR foster! My closest companion is my foster mom. Nothing makes me happier than to be with her.

Where do you hang out when you are home alone? My crate!

Where do you sleep? My crate – although my foster mom rotates us and gives us each a night to sleep with her!

Do you like walking on a leash? I love going for walks! I pull initially, but it’s because I am excited. We have to go slow when I do that, so I am learning to be composed right from the get so that I can get my walk on.

Do you have any "not-so-great" habits that we should know about? For instance, do you bark or dig in the yard? I do bark when I am excited (and I sound like a beagle), but it is not really too bad. I am, however, the most agile dog my foster mom has ever seen, despite my previously broken leg! I will need a secure yard with a good fence … I can pretty much clear anything in front of me from a sitting position.

Are you house-trained? (Meaning do you go potty outside)? I have not had an accident in the house, but my foster mom is diligent about making sure we go out regularly.

Do you like water? We have a pool, but it has been too cold to swim. I like to bite at the water stream from the hose when my foster mom is cleaning the yard though.

What do you love about your foster family? I love that I am cared for. Through my surgery and healing. Through adjusting to new rules. Through learning what I can and cannot do. I am loved and cared for. I have to have manners, even when I am impatient. I have great food, a warm and fluffy bed, and lately we have been able to sit in the living room by a fire!

What was your life like before being brought into NorCal Bully Breed Rescue? I don’t know … but since I had a severely broken leg and I am sensitive to sudden movements, my foster mom thinks I may not have had the best start. UC Davis saw what a special boy I was and then NorCal Bully Breed Rescue did, too! And now I have a foster mom that makes sure I am taken care of ... How fortunate is THAT?!?!? I’m so grateful, because I know they will be sure I find the best family to grow old with, and I am patiently waiting for my family.

NorCal Bully Breed Rescue is a foster based rescue with foster homes spread all throughout the Sacramento area. We usually require our adopters to be within a 50 to 100 mile radius of us, depending on the dog, and depending on the home. This is because we need to do a yard check to guarantee that the potential adopter's yard is secure, and also have them be close enough should any behavioral issues arise, and the assistance of our trainer is needed. We are, however, willing to adopt out of our area, including the Bay Area, Tahoe, and even further. We've even adopted out of state on very special occasions. We try our best to match our dogs to the perfect homes, and match them based on their personalities, not their looks. Adoptions are not done on a first come, first serve basis, rather in the order of what homes are the right match for that particular dog. Our adoption fees are based on the dog and range from $200-$350. In the case of senior dogs (6+ years), fees will be waived to the right home. This includes spay/neuter, vaccines, microchip, and deworming (if necessary).

Astro's adoption donation is $200
