Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Arwen is a petite beagle weighing about 20 pounds. She was rescued from a shelter in Michigan’s thumb region in early February. Her coat is much thicker than I’ve ever seen on a beagle, and because she is not house trained (though she is making progress), I think she may have lived mostly outside, perhaps in a kennel that was either unheated or only heated a little bit.
As you can see by the photos Arwen is a pretty typical tri-color beagle. A few things have changed since I submitted her first bio. Her appetite is finally what I expect from a beagle. I don't know why but her first several weeks with us she was a very fussy eater and would often leave much of her meal untouched. While she is still somewhat selective in her choice of food, she is eating an appropriate amount now; for the last week she has consumed every morsel in her bowl. She seems happiest with the Natural Balance dog food roll, but also eagerly devours her kibble if it is mixed with the proper wet food (she favors chicken and turkey and won't touch salmon).
She has finally found her beagle prey drive! She gets pretty torqued up when the squirrel taunts her from the tree in the neighboring yard, and joins the resident beagle in sounding the alarm when people or dogs walk past the house. She will also bark inside if she's hungry or feeling playful or if she sees something out the window worth barking at. She's a talkative little girl!
With the trend toward warmer weather we’ve enjoyed a few walks with Arwen. She walks very nicely wearing her step-in harness and generally doesn’t pull very hard. I use a 4-foot leash which enables me to control her easily and keep her on one side of me so she doesn’t trip me or my husband by crossing in front of us. The only negative aspect to walking with Arwen is that she howls at every dog she sees. This will be less of a distraction as the nice weather becomes "old news" and people become less interested in walking their "best friends."
Arwen still does not like the crate though she is getting marginally better about being crated and has periods of quiet interspersed with periods of barking and “digging.” She is keeping her crate dry now, too - a victory on the road to house training.
Arwen gets along fine with my submissive beagle girl but can be a bit of a bully about toys. She shows no food aggression with either humans or our resident beagle. She is well behaved and stays off the sofa (though she does get to sit on my lap in the chair most evenings). She sleeps on her dog bed on our bedroom floor; we keep the door closed and she stays in her bed until morning.
Like many beagles, she exhibits counter surfing tendencies and nosing in the garbage if I leave the cabinet door open, though she obeys a sharp “NO!” Arwen is sweet and loving little girl who is working really hard on her house training. Don’t let her house-training-in-progress scare you off from this sweetheart!
