My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

What is your name?
My name is Yara!

How old are you?
Good question. I’m probably somewhere around 4 years old. I’m old enough to have some chill-ness, but young enough to keep up with any of those young whipper snappers!

What do you look like?
I’m super cute. I’m a pretty gray/blue color with some brown hues. I’m about 55 lbs and average height for an American Pit Bull Terrier. I have a black muzzle, but a pink mark on my lip that just adds some character. It’s like one of those Marilyn Monroe beauty mark things. My foster mom’s FAVORITE thing about me is that I have an underbite. Sometimes when I close my mouth, you can see my little bottom teeth sticking out. What’s even better is that when I nap, sometimes my tongue pokes out of my mouth.

What do you like to eat?
I like everything! My foster mom is kinda picky about what I eat, but so far I’ve done well with just about anything! My foster mom prefers fish-based foods for me.

What kind of personality do you have?
I make people laugh all of the time. I can be energetic and go for a run, or I can be really chill and take a 3 hour nap on the couch. I lack awareness of personal boundaries, so don’t be surprised if I decide the best place for me to nap is on your shoulders. I’m a really great mixture of chill, but active. I love to be outside, but I’ll warn you, I’m a little bit of a hot mess on a leash. I get so excited I JUST NEED TO GO ALL OF THE PLACES RIGHT NOW!

Describe your perfect day:
My perfect day would include a relaxing snooze-fest on the couch, as well as some quality snuggle time with a human! I would love to gnaw on a chew for a while and go for a run! Really, my perfect day could include just about anything! I’m a multi-faceted kind of gal.

What is your favorite toy?
I really like toys that I can munch on! Bully sticks, antlers, and stuffed Kongs are a great treat. I’ve been very respectful of the household items that actually aren’t toy’s (like shoes), even though my foster brother tries to convince me to hoard them like he does. But, I’m a good girl!

Do you know any tricks?
I know sit and lay down! I’m a smart girl and look to humans for guidance.

What scares you?
When you look this good, the only thing that’s scary is the aging process. I kid, I kid. Okay, but seriously. Is that a wrinkle?

Do you like cats?
My mom hasn’t seen me around any cats, but she worries that I would like them a little too much. As in, I would like to taste them. As in, I would like to eat a cat. As in, “Onay Atscay” if you’re into pig latin.

Do you have any doggie best friends?
I have two foster siblings in my home; Shiva and Samwell. Shiva is a laid back girl and I’m very respectful of her blasé vibe. Samwell is a lovable little nugget, but he can be much more playful. I’m great with both dogs! I’m even tolerant of Samwell when he decides that he would like to cuddle by sitting on my neck.

If you could be anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Anywhere the people are! I love people and attention. Ideally, I’d be cuddled up with a human on the couch or in bed. My foster mom is trying to enforce a “no-bed” rule with me, but I sneak up there when she’s not looking.

How is your health?
I’m a healthy girl! I’ve been spayed and I’m up to date on my vaccinations. I had a tooth infection (ooowwwieee), but got hooked up with some antibiotics. I may need a follow up appointment to see if that tooth needs to be pulled, but my foster mom promised she’d let the tooth fairy give me a surprise so I’m fine with it.

Who do you live with in your foster home and who is your closest companion?
I share a home with a spazzy foster dad, Tony, and a clingy helicopter foster mom, Heather. My foster siblings, Shiva and Samwell, live with me so they have to put up with those spazz-icopter parents, too.

Where do you hang out when you are home alone?
When I am the only one in the house, my foster parents put me in my crate. Let’s be honest…I hated the crate at first. My foster parents could tell I hadn’t experienced one before, or at least not in a positive way. I’ve already become SO much better about crate time.

Where do you sleep?
I sleep in my crate! I did my best wolf-howl impersonations for the first night they made me sleep in there, but now I don’t mind it a bit! I sleep through the night without making a peep and I know I’m safe and sound and that my foster parents will come get me when it’s breakfast time! My foster parents say I snore loud, but I say they’re just not sleeping hard enough if they don’t snore like me!

What do you love about your foster family?
I love that they spend so much time with me! I’m definitely an extrovert and a cuddling-fiend, so I’m glad they spend lots of time with me. I also love that they’re providing boundaries and structure to my routine so that I’ll be my best self for my adopters!

What was life like before you were rescued by Even Chance and brought into the welcoming arms of your foster parents?
I was rescued by Even Chance in July of 2018! I came from a shelter in East St. Louis called St. Clair Animal Control.
Prior to going to animal control, a nice woman had told my family she would help me by paying for me to get spayed. She followed through, but unfortunately, my family abandoned me after that. Animal control had records that I had visited their facility as a stray previously, so I was confused about why my family didn’t come get me this time. Nice people tried to contact my people about getting me, but they never came…
Some lovely ladies from a group called Stray Angels worked with Ashley at Animal Control to make sure I got rescued. A couple of people from Even Chance decided I’d be a great candidate for a foster home and now I live with a couple of those Even Chance people!

Even Chance does not operate on a first come, first serve basis. In most cases we have already decided the type of home and owner we want for our dogs. These opinions are based on the temperament tests we perform prior to accepting the dog into our program and the behaviors the dogs display as they grow up. Our agency reserves the right to deny acceptance of any dog to an owner who we feel the lifestyle does not match that of the dog. We are in no way judging you or your lifestyle; we simply want to put our dogs in the best living situation possible. We take very seriously the decision we make when it comes to placing one of our dogs in a forever home. If I sound like the perfect pit bull for your and your family and you are interested in giving me a forever home, do not hesitate! Please fill out an application here and my foster family will contact you to schedule an in-person meet and greet. We look forward to meeting any and all interested applicants.
